Yea, playing with dsp showed me how sensitive the ear is to frequency response deviations.
If tonally correct even very cheap drivers can sound better than boxes with better drivers but less correct FR response.

fun party box for outside
aluminized cone, sandwich, constrained layer damping with silicone glue, piezo tweeter with 6db filtering.
great sound, low tuned reflex
inside damped egg crates and 1cm foam. 8cm reflex diameter, 50cm long in 80 liters, 30cm no name driver, added double magnet

sounds really good: main driver fullrange, no crossover, removed dustcap. Modified 30cm bass
Slightly dominant mids.
With only 0.2 ohms in line the bass begins to be more dominant.
I like slight emphasize of 1 or two db in the mids in loudspeakers

If we are talking affordable, kick some bottom, outdoor party speakers, I have two entries:
A dual 15" 3 way
A 4x12" plus 12" coax
Being frugal minded, all components were either clearance items or repurposed.
Both do what was intended very well and can be moved with a simple hand truck.

Hehe, this is my party stuff. The PA stuff is gone now as I have downsized, knowing that those days are behind me.
Cheers to all those that can still enjoy.

I did build a few, this is for my garden (low power), a simple Fane 12-250TC fullrange driver in a big box going down to 30Hz, but it can only handle 20w (with 98dB sensivity that is enough).
And this is a more ambitious one to give small garden parties, a 2" compression driver in horn with a 12" woofer in a MLTL, with enough power for garden parties to 50ppl.

@Cal Weldon
how do you balance the sound with one coax and four bass drivers? With EQ of which sort (wiring/crossover/dsp)?
@waxx
Ah, nice to see the Fane which gives complete sound as a single driver!
you have some more close up fotos for aficionados?
Any taming of mid frequencies applied?

It's a while since i build this, so i don't know the details anymore. It has a filter build in but don't ask me what it was, i made it on measurments in the box.

They are very different speakers with different goals, the fane is good for the garden as it's a very dynamic but coloured speaker that does not need a lot of power to go loud enough to have background music in decent quality spread over my terras. It's sound is very easy to listen (with the filter). It can run from a car battery for a whole day as it only uses a few watts of power in most cases. Here i use the ACA's but most of the time i actually use a 20w class d amp with it when running of a car battery.
The 2 way is higher quality in sound, but not as easy to use, it's more a party speaker, more fit for party with a lot more volume and a tighter sound. It uses a Faital HF-201 CD in a 2380 clone horn and a Beyma 12BR70 woofer active dsp eq and pro audio amps. It needs a lot more power, so we need a generator or a AC plug connected to the grid to run it.

It's tri-amped with active XO's. It's usually four amps as I use one for all 8 bass units, one for each of the bass of the coax and one for both tweeters.how do you balance the sound with one coax and four bass drivers? With EQ of which sort (wiring/crossover/dsp)?
The cabinets for the coax have a vented back. I usually run them from around 200 Hz. and up. The bass cabinet is ported.

effectively its an omnipolar loudspeaker
the thin "wall" lets "all" through giving a spacey sound. Indeed.
This has something.
EQed it works
^ One day I needed to test a new amp build and only had one intact B&W floor-stander, so I took a half finished box and built it out with carboard including the baffle. The drivers were mounted in the flimsy baffle. To my surprise the Franken box sounded every bit as good as the B&W. I've not taken the "rules" seriously since.
@Haze Head
yes, I hear some prolongued resonances but these seem to be evenly distributed.
And its giving some sound experience like having more than a mono speaker filling the space in a pleasant manner.
could be it has something of a DML loudspeaker.
