Ship Of Theseus: compatible, interchangeable amplifier modules

Playing music in a passive way (Mini Dissipante chassis received) after integrating most stuff inside. 30/40 minutes yesterday night
I had to put the power boards up compared to the usual/standard position, to let a bit of clearance with the components of the 1st stage.
I have different details to take care of, but, it is nice to know it is 90% completed.
Front panel picture is from the movie "Ship of Theseus" Wiki Link. Found it fitting...Haven't watch it
[learning point on this integration: cable material is important if you want to bend them easily. It can be too stiff...[white XLR cables from connectors to pot, some others wires...]

… let s say that, anything goes wrong, those speakers and these front end are sacrificial.
Tucson has cheap easy to find tl071.
Others opamps for Tucson, and M2x front ends are waiting for when everything is … smooth sailing !
But yeah, many thanks for the ability to put M2x front ends in there/ for this Ship of Theseus!
And with FE2020 accepting Single Ended power supply, it is an integrated amp

By the way, some design decisions were, i think now, based on a wrong understanding of one of 6L6 post (Link 2022 Front End )

What is written
"Of course, if you have a follower amp (F4, MoFo, Theseus Mosfet by itself, etc…) then stock gain is what you’ll want"
What i took away [wrongly i think now]
"if you have a follower amp (F4, MoFo, Theseus , etc…)",

so i thought i would need all help possible to have high gain / voltage going into the Theseus (full power app with Nimitiz), hence, FE2022 @20dB gain and use of balanced inputs, with necessary 4ways Alps pot so that, in the future, i could feed 4Vrms instead of 2Vrms from unbalanced inputs. I was already looking for streamer having both RCA & XLR outputs...

= I think now i could have made things a tad more simple... if not mistaken.

To make a Theseus "amp channel" board (picture attached) deliver maximum output power juuuuuust barely before clipping, you must drive its input with a signal amplitude of about 13V RMS.

Each of the Theseus "front end" boards (Nimitz, Lexington, Missouri, Kitty Hawk, Hornet, Bon Homme Richard, Pequod) has a fixed gain of 5 volts per volt. Thus if you've got a chassis containing

RCAjack -----> Theseus_front_end_Hornet -----> Theseus_amp_channel -----> Loudspeaker

then you must drive the RCAjack with an input signal amplitude of about (13 / 5) = 2.6V RMS if you want to deliver maximum output power. Many preamps can do this but if yours cannot, you could consider adding another gain stage.

Thanks for the info about 13v before clipping and the gain in typical Theseus 1st stage.
For the moment, streamer is RCA outputs with 2.1Vrms max.
RCA from streamer-> Front End 2022 -> Theseus Nimitz -> Theseus mosfet.
I have the possibility later to use XLR 4Vrms into FE2022, but not needed i guess

Soundwise, comparing with streamer-> Korg Nutube -> M2x, the Theseus feel sharper for the highs and more defined for the bass.
This is a qualitative assessment only…

Hi.
After a few weeks of listenning to it in "proto mode", i finally installed the front panel, XLR & power supply adaptation on the back panel.
Ship of Theseus with Front End 2022 also inside.
Here are the pictures.
Notes:
1. XLR just below the speaker connection is not a good idea (spkr cables in xlr cables in some arrangement)
2. i once bought 3wires cable for XLR to pot, which had a very very stiff plastic outer layer. Very hard to manipulate, so a pain to arrange internally.
3. Big switch is for a potentiel adaptation for a later amp. 3D printed plastic part to match bigger IEC model and the actual Ship of Theseus PSU inlet
(but given the mess of wire, i may never change the inside for another amp!)
4. Some screws access are a pain for the front panel...
5. I find the Modushop anti-vibration legs a bit too high. I might change that later

Goal of easily changing the input M2x-style card not tested, but i have vertical access (easier on 1 side than the other), which was the goal.
