Foam rubber surround. I wonder how long that will last.

Arc, If that price shocks you then you should never check the price of a Feastrex.

My understanding is the new SEAS foam surrounds have a new coating to prevent UV decay and will last quite some time.

Feastrex looks more like what it is priced at. That Seas thing just looks cheap to me. :cannotbe:

It's clearly too expensive for my blood...but it certainly doesn't look cheap to me. The frame is beautiful, as is the suspension, and the magnet. Wht looks cheep to you?

That frequency response doesn't look too great to me - more than 10dB ripple in some places.

Of course this is only one of many factors, but:

I have a pretty decent collection of response curves of full range
drivers, all taken at 1 meter on axis with .33 octave smoothing.

Comparing them, I see that the SEAS full range is comparable to
other drivers in this category, and better than many.

Here's a composite, taken both near field and 1 meter, of the
4 ohm version in an open baffle.

Sean, its just that red magnet. Originally done by Focal on there expensive woofers and then copied by every big and small OEM out of China for there cheap woofers. Would of prefered polished black chrome. Now that would look nice. With a dark grey cone and black polished frame with 'Exotic' etched in it. But hey, you can't have everything!

Well that's a good open baffle for you. Seas specs were done
with a sealed box, but I don't find the need for baffle step
correction or other Eq with a properly sized flat open baffle.
This has been true of Lowthers, Moths, and other full range
drivers as well.

They should rename it the PT barnum full range special

As far as I know, I'm the only one here who has actually played
with these drivers. I have heard almost all the contenders
with their best foot forward (from the Feastrex and AER to the
Pioneer Bu-Fu) and I have enjoyed them all in context.

I would have liked to see the SEAS Exotics at $100, but that's
not going to happen. Is the SEAS worth the price? Depending
on what you're looking for, YES.

It seems to me that the 'full range' market is much bigger than I once thought. Now, let's say Seas wanted to dominate the market, they would look at the production costs and decide what they could garner, market wise, with a heafty reduction in costs.

Henry Ford once stated that there were two ways to make (can't remember the exact amount) one million dollars in sales. You could sell one car for one million, or you could sell one million cars for one dollar. In his case he went for the later concept, and the rest is history, while 95% of the other auto makers went out of business.

The point is that economically speaking, I see no way production costs are that high. So why not drastically cut price, sell lots of speakers, and take the lead in the 'full range' market? Wal-Mart comes first to mind here.

That is what I would do. As it stands, I will not be purchasing any of these any time soon, and I will bet you most of the members here will follow suit.
