ScanSpeak doubles down with 15" Elipti

From what I understand it cuts down symmetry induced distortion from waves bouncing around the coil/cone achieving breakup style resonance. Key point is measurably reduced distortion.

I was hoping the 15" unit would be a sub but looks more suitable for use in studio mains.

Great looking drivers but the price is eye watering.

Sorry to burst bubbles, Altec did this years, like decades ago. This low Q 15 is a mid bass pro aplication driver at best. Yes it will play loud, but not in the lower octaves one would expect from a 15" in a hi-fi application. As a hi-fi woofer it is an expensive and near useless driver. Too bad.

Vas is not huge it is in the same ballpark as the competitors are. Le is to be found in the datatsheet and is 0.8 mH.

This is not a driver for tiny subs etc, it is intended for real LOUD-speakers and not rumblers, faint-whisperers or loud-screamers.

Regards

Charles

What are those then?

Ah, indeed. Missed that one. Could be worse.

But it ain't gonna be that LOUD either.. is it?

Let's put it against the very excellent (budget friendly) BMS 15S430V2, which is around € 300,- each (so you can buy 4.5 of these for a single SS). It can go a whopping 6dB louder from 25Hz up in the same box and same tuning. It's to be seen if distortion wise it does any better.

phase accurate - I hadn't seen the price for the 15" version, I was referring to the elliptical range in general.

vacuphile - The measurements I saw struck me as excellent but the value propposion is so poor it wasn't worth looking any further.

I'll see if I can nab some graphs from hifi-compass later. Does anyone know if hifi compass is happy for images to be borrowed?

No advantage for an oval voice-coil on a 15". These are marketing driven drivers if I've ever seen one. You can get a 24" copper sleeved neo super woofer with 32mm xmax for similar cash. Not to mention the numerous reasonably priced prosound drivers with similar specs.

Who is the primary audience for this line?
