SB Acoustics 3 way active build - Advice

I am very late to this discussion but I have some experience with the plate amp FA 123 having recently completed a center channel with it. Here's my thoughts;

  • Use a smaller 4-5" midrange. This will let you push the tweeter crossover to 3 kHz, improving the tweeter's dynamic range considerably.
  • The Hypex FA123 has the same max power rating regardless of speaker impedance (8 vs. 4) so might as well stick with 8 Ohm drivers, which will have a higher minimum
  • Hypex e-mail support is excellent. The unit I received had the wrong firmware and thought it was a 2-way.

@eriksquires: Your comment about rated power is what I would say not true. Hypex clearly specify power is at 4 ohm. Picture taken from general manual.

Is guess for Fusion 123, one should expect around 65 watt in 8 ohm. VituixCAD can easily simulate power with LT.

Woofer with heavy LT (in small volume) 8 ohm load with peaks in bass not impossible to reach clipping. In other words amp is limiting before driver would hit X-max. Music could have massive boost, requiring headroom in bass= amplifier (try adding narrow notch in simulation of 5-8 db at 30 hz 🙂

Would definitely aim for 4 ohm load.

Of course woofer with 8 ohm may in reality be 6.6 ohm in practice where it counts.

I agree that one should take with gain structure. Fine to boost, then I would lower gain elsewhere. Also remember some recordings have very close to or actual clipping in the recording. So good to lower gain a bit on the input. At least that is my experience.

I'm so sorry, you are right. I am confusing this unit with another. I'm embarassed!

No worries. I’m no expert either and was from beginning ‘fooled’ myself.

It’s only from random experiment I ran into strange behavior and had to investigate further what was going on.

Not meaning to offend you or in any way play smart. Just thought it could help other take best decisions.

If I remember correct, @b_force wrote in a post that good guideline is keeping Linkwitz Transform boost at around 6 dB.

It is refreshing to see someone owning a mistake. Thankyou @eriksquires .
We have all witnessed the stubborn fool who will not admit he is wrong, but instead he digs in his heels and accuses the universe of not cooperating with his expectations of how it should be...
Thank you for the kind words, Jim.

For the record I am the OTHER kind of fool. Mostly I feel bad for the OP I meant to help. 🙄

That's correct, 6dB is twice the voltage, which could already clip the pre-amp stage if you're not careful.
So even in a scenario when there is plenty of power available, you could still be in trouble.

Btw, may I remind you that the continues power of those Hypex modules is A LOT lower.
This is limited by their power supply and can be found in their datasheets.

  • Thank You

Painter rang me this morning to say he's got one finished so i popped in to take some photos.
Inside a dark gloomy shed, so photos wont do them justice at this stage but you get the idea.
The other one will be dry early next week so i'll pick them up then and begin the testing.

Got them both home earlier than expected. Assembled and couldn't be happier with how they came up.
Spend a bit of time getting the drivers time aligned before i done any listening.
They sound amazing. I still have lots of tuning/testing to do but very happy.

Thankyou to all those who offered guidance and advice.
