RV build TL, OB, Horns, Top horns with TL or OB bass, sub or no sub?

I can move them out as far as 5 ft but 3 is better, door on the right not installed yet but where it would have to go though with more work to fortify the RV wall I go move it 4" further out from the back wall, I will draw that in. We will not use the door except for going out to the BBQ, deck, in the right weather so speakers can be moved as needed and critical listening moved out to do their best.

I know horns, OB, etc just not the right thing for our situation but as mentioned have to test them to see what we can do, Dr Edgar was my friend and I want to use his speaker, at least the top section and bottom crossover if possible.

Thanks!
Rick

You are being exceptionally helpful, very much appreciated🙂

I meant to post the link to the 8's, on sale, get paid in a few days, will order 18 or 20 of them, always good to have spares or if get a bad one........

If I space them just right, they are 3.44 instead of 3.06 so only need a bit wider than yours, have them drawn to fit and slightly wider than that, wings plenty of room, etc... 3/4"a top and bottom plate, frames just touching each other( can leave air gap), height comes out perfect.

I have a few boxes of RAAMmat on hand, very effective. Also some Ensolite and other materials. No BB except scrapes, have some very good 3/4 maple plywood I could use but can buy BB if I should.

I started refinishing, refining as well, the horns a long time ago and never finished them, I can make them look very modern to fit out design style.

Any estimate as to how low eight 8's will go? I know a wider baffle helps, wings as well, I have room to work this out, maybe test baffles and wings, etc...

If must I could build two subs, even into the floor if not good to have them, no matter how small I can make them, on the back wall.

Very excited to do this, will take some time as winter is here though we might get some very nice weather I can work in before spring, I hope.

In the end this might not work out but sure going to be fun🙂

Thanks again!
Rick

I used to go to Image Dynamics often to learn, help build CES projects, etc, where I met Dr Edgar, he was quite frail so I would do all I could if he was working on anything to help him out. Later I moved away and when bought a house I got is rather beat up demo Slimline's that he upgraded the caps, coils, resistors and super tweeters. Then I searched until I found a spare set of the JBL mids and the Pioneer midbass drivers. It seems I only paid $800 for everything, amazing deal.

With an Oppo 83SE, fully upgraded Baby Sophia amp, very good subs, 1kw AB sub amp with built in EQ, etc...it was a dang finding very low cost system🙂

I was going to get Titans and the huge sub for them but just did not have a proper place to use them. The last time I went to CES he was there with them with a 3k tube amp, cheap plate amp on the sub, my favorite system at the show. If fact, only a few other systems even sounded decent and one or two I could live with except not at hundred of thousands $$$$$$$$$, not worth it to me even when I had that kind of money years later.

If either the horns or bass units do not work out I will build something that does but I have to give this a try.

No not much money but a fine life, happier than ever🙂

I looked at just about everything I could find for a bass horn and nothing seemed to work out, still open to it, would love it, everything just to big even to go down to 80 hz. Actually I did not dig that deep into a folded TL, etc. but what I did see did not seem to be viable.

I would love to get to look like this and sound great, also moved the door 2" further forward to better access.
No subwoofer, shelves are design ideas.
Couch can move back 25" for sit down listening though we seldom do.
If used sub amp and router behind desk drawers(actually high grade and modern filing cabinets) with custom center drawer and 2cm Brazilian green soapstone top like the kitchen. Wiring in conduit in wall. TV folds down from ceiling, we seldom use it.

Would a TL be the best option in your experience or might another alignment work better, or easier, or both?

Hi Rick,

Every loudspeaker type has its advantages and disadvantages, and every user has their own idea of what constitutes "best". Only you can decide which system to ultimately choose. It all depends on the quality of the driver(s) you use, the size of the enclosure you can accept, the purpose to which the speaker is to be put, the environment in which it is to operate, etc, etc.

A well-designed transmission line system can produce very good results, but so can a well-designed bass reflex system, a well-designed closed box system or a well-designed horn loaded system. The list goes on...

Kind regards,

David

OK, thanks, assumed this could be done in HR as part of the Wizard.
It certainly can. That is what I had in mind when I referred to manual tweaking. Generate a baseline design using the TL Design tool, save the results back to the main Input Parameters window and then open the Loudspeaker Wizard and play with the value of Rg to your heart's content 🙂. Note that negative values of Rg can also be specified, if so desired.

If however you want the feature to be embedded into the MJK methods themselves, then only Martin can help you there.

That’s cool that you knew Dr Edgar. I use his tractrix horn profiles on all my tractrix horns. Adding midbass injection ports on the tractrix make for some of the best sounding speakers I have ever made. This is the Trynergy.

David,
I have built many types of speakers, all great fun, I just want to give the SLOB multi driver a try though know it might now work in the space I have, just have to do it. I was intent on some sort of folded TL, etc, still considering it but my brain is not engaging at this time, for some reason just not grasping using the program, not sure why and a bit concerned as I usually figure most things out quite easily. I am actually reading up on this, hope I have a lot of good years left as this is the best part of my life which was not always a good one until now.

I would really like to go without a subwoofer, might of missed something, will read more, not sure I can get 30-300 with a folded TL, etc, that is loud enough at low freqs, etc and or not be huge as well if it does work.

Whatever I end up with will be done as test units before building something furniture grade so I might end up with a few setups before finalizing on one. The easiest to me is the SLOB eight by 8" and cheap to do and takes up very little space so looks like I will start with it, might end with it, if not I will just have to learn to use your program🙂

Cool horn indeed🙂
Dr Edgar was such a nice guy, I wish I had a chance to see him more after I left SoCal in 2005 but only went back twice on business and not able to see him🙁

Do you guys know the history on the Tractix horn? I case some might not it is quite interesting.
Originally being developed for audio, WWII came, designer tasked with making it into a weapon, deceived them by not making it work
as they wanted. Immigrated to Canada after the war and stopped working on it. Dr Edgar learned of it years later, found out he had passed but widow alive so
went to see her. It took some effort but convinced her it was only for audio, she gave him all the papers on it, he developed the design from there.
This is the story I got directly from Dr Edgar and I have read it somewhere as well, a few details might be off a bit but pretty sure I got it right here.
