Return-to-zero shift register FIRDAC

Yeah. Me. Been away for a while, the envelope was there on the doorstep buried under the usual mountain. Looks good, though I think I'm going to be challenged by the SMD work. I've done SMD before but with old guy friendly pin spacings etc. I see a hot air gun in my near future. Been busy and completely forgot to say I'd received them. Sorry...

Do JLC PCB (or whereever) let you order multiple stencils when you order boards? Then those who'd prefer to use them could pay extra for the privilege. Had a look, but couldn't see it could be done... Too late for this GB but useful later GBs if possible?

Ok I've ordered the BOM I'd originally prepared (DAC and filter):
a) OPA1676 next delivery is November - I ordered but it means Nov time frame..
b) the relays I removed from my order - I will need to find a different source or another compatible option as they have a "not happening" lead time.
c) one of the SMT resistors has a back order - I ordered but may find a substitute in a later order if it doesn't arrive in Nov..
d) connectors I will order in the next big order and I have an idea if what I want.

The Mrs is going to kill me.. (that's ~£500 in two days on mouser).. so I suspect I will be making this up to her.

I'll have a look - also noted I stated OPA1676 but it's the OPA1678IDR that's the November time frame. I also note I have some 5532s in the BOM that are now redundant and now be replaced by the OPA210 that was originally on back order. So that BOM needs an update for anyone that is going to use it.
Always handy to have a couple of 5532s around.

Well, just about complete!

Now to do a really good examination with the USB microscope and check my build over before applying some power...

Any recommendations for first power-on? I'm intending to use a relay in the +15v line to fulfill the requirement of the +/- 15 v timings. For now I'll just run with bench power supplies until it is debugged. I'm sure there will be mistakes as that was a lot of SMD components to fit and get 100% right.

For now I am going to test with the "clone" Amanaro (which is set up and does appear to be outputting DSD from the two channels)

Hopefully I won't let the smoke out!

It works!! 😱
:hphones::spin::eguitar::violin:

Whoohoo, sounds very nice, even off one side of the balanced outputs and on bench power supplies with only DSD64 sample source files.

I will acquire some more music in native DSD.

Next plan is to build some power supplies and find a case to suit. Ultimately I was thinking of the simple PCM -> DSD modulator and using it with a squeezebox (I have used SB3 and SB receiver in the past and hooked into the I2S outputs and I do have a spare one to use)

Also I do have some Llundahl transformers that I could use to turn the balanced outputs into single-ended.

So much to yet do but the fun is now starting!!

@MarcelvdG Thanks for designing this wonderful DAC and making it available to us. And to Ray, thanks for facilitating the pcbs group buy.

For whom has not sourced the parts for the filter yet, a small correction for the BOM.
"C43,C54,C27,C16",C_1206_HandSoldering,4,33 nF NP0 2 %,"KEMET C0805C333G3GEC7210, Mouser 80-C0805C333G3GECLR"
this is an 805 format part (80-C0805C333G3GECLR)
Could be replaced with one of the following 1206 format caps:
C1206C333F5GEC7210
or
C1206C333F3GECAUTO7210
In case you have already bought the smaller caps you can always close the gap with some solder.

You are absolutely right, the footprint is 1206. I just had a look at the invoice for the capacitors I used, and I used C1206C333F1GEC7210, the 100 V version of the capacitor you recommended. No idea why I put the wrong type in my .csv file. Attached is a version with your correction.

Would you suggest against of the arrangement I am trying, where the DAC PCB is on top of DAC-Filter PCB ?
I am planning for DSDit on a BBB as input and I would like to stay under 50mm total height.
I have kept the clearance between the PCBs at 10mm.
I understand that the proposed arrangement keep the digital part away from the analog as much as possible.
I have also attached a PDF that can be used as a hole punching template if printed with actual size option (not fit to paper).
