Just adding fuel to the fire...years ago a diy friend of mine made two identical resistor-based passive pots, one using Vishay and the other Shinko. Of the two, the Shinko sounded sweeter and more organic. You'll get no argument from me about this from me because it is fact based on extensive listening. I had a very nicely build pot made for my ICE amp, from an Australian supplier recently. Unfortunately I didn't know Shinko resistors were still available (from Parts Connection) pricey, yes, but I would have happily gone that way had I known. The Vishay are ok but sound just a touch mechanical and un-involving in this configuration.

Using a ICE amp 🙁
Erlend, I have had the same experience. That is why we used the original Roderstein resistors rather than Vishay bulk metal types.

Mr. Curl I have very big respect for you. Can you please tell about powersupplys and cables ? Is there metallized film capasitors in the supplys ?
If I use MKT or MKP in a supply I can hear the same as you. When I quite this capasitors the problem is gone.
Erlend, I cannot answer these questions on this thread. You should look through my Blowtorch thread, especially part 1 for answers.
I have been reading in the tread. What I can see is that we have very different ideas about a lot of things. Because of that the Bulk Foil give different results in our circuits.
Alu caps theese days are not similar to thoose 20 years ago. Nelson Pass prefer the Silmic II just as me

Before condemning ICE amps out of hand, check out Cullens Circuits (Wyred)🙂 Nobody have anything to say about Shinko? This was the original topic...
I have used a lot of Shinkos. The only ones I liked was the originals. I do not like what is sold as Shinko now. I always have to change them to Vishay.
Thanks for the update. I did not know. I thought they were selling NOS stock! That helps in future projects.
Is there any experience with different types of SMT-resistors, like the KOA RK73A or the SSM-RRS, supposed to be better sounding?
Thanks,
Marcel
Thanks,

Almost everything, really good, is overpriced.
QFT
This is how TC Z-foil resistors look:
Oh, they are pretty!

AFAIK Hifi-collective in UK has the old stock (but better to ask them).
I have tried them from Hificollective and from Partsconnexion but I do not think the sound is like those I have heard earlier wich also had another color. I think they found some old stock without termination and added their own. Because of this they do not have the same neutrality. Those old ones was the only wich could make Copenhagen Hifi club ;s Tripath sound clear in the midrange.
Color is important, even in measurable qualities. I have measured the difference, myself.
😡 So you are making fun with me .😡 Now my respect is totally gone. I must tell it was already gone when I read you are using Lm 317 / 337.
Seemed to me as Mr C just said that the color change also incorporated a difference in production, measurable differences.
Mr Curl said the same about other brand types, one of which the Roederstein Resista, aknowledged by Mr Charles Ayre Hansen.
Not becoming to be so touchy.

Are you awake? The color change MEANS that the resistor material has changed. Thirty years ago, Owens Corning made a resistor that changed from grey to green. I called the factory, and they told me it was the SAME. I measured its excess noise with a Quatech noise analyzer, thanks to Scott's Wurcer's advice, and measured a SERIOUS difference in excess noise. I never trusted a sales rep, or factory engineer again.
Sorry Mr Curl ! 😱 A friend of mine told me you was having big fun about my idea with the color.
