I would also think so.

My next concern is, how many balanced sources do you guys are actually using? I can only think about one, being the output from a DAC. Unless you are in a pro environment, I don't see any reason to have balanced output on a tuner, tape deck or whatever else you migh use. Then RCA jacks would be connected in place of XLRs with a wire, I guess😉

APOX-IS2

Which would people prefer, PCB mounted RCA, or PCB mounted XLR. It seems most people are using RCA?
Maybe I can fit one ot top of the other? (But probably not :bawling: )

I also updated the APOX-IS2 web page with more information.
The APOX-IS2 board can be a little confusing concerning
the different possible configurations.

apox-is2

I hope this helps?

I generally use adaptors to convert my unbalanced sources to balanced connectors. Main concern is still easier mounting, short signal path...

The ultimate board for me would be two bal in, two single ended in one balanced out and one single ended out, with volume control on same board. The board should have in and out for buffer/gain stage. I believe Cardas makes a good RCA that mounts on a pcb.

Ok, lets go with Peters changes, and if you could mirror image the boards ..........😉 . This would save us a huge amount of space to place our gain /buffer cards and power supplies. and lead to a neat design with the minimum number of flying leads. If possible take a look inside an Ayre K-5 preamp.

Craig,

In reading about the mods for IS2, I'm wondering if I misunderstood IS1. I thought we could mix RCA and XLR inputs on an IS1 board as is (your prototype photos showed both connectors, no?).

I have a fully balanced system for front channels (L/R) and need about 4 XLR inputs as well as 4 RCA inputs. I was planning on using one IS1 as RCA inputs only and a second one as XLR only. Can I use both outputs: an RCA output on the single ended board and an XLR on the balanced board?

For the center and surrounds all my sources are single ended, so these channels are to use RCA only. However, I was thinking of having one XLR on each of these for a future source that might be a fully balanced 5.1. Is this possible with IS1 boards?

Arne,

You are a tough person to please. 😉

P.S. Performance and the cleanest signal path is my main concern.

Thanx...(I think)
:shy:

I have already ordered my first set...but with this speed of development, and with more & new functions...I realize that this will not be THE control-system, but just one of THEM...

Robert,

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. Yes, you can mix XLR, and RCA
on one board.

However the APOX-IS2 has the ability to to switch 2 RCA channels on what used to be a single input.
But if you add an XLR input, then you lose this ability, and are only allowed to place only 1 RCA channel per input. (I think?)

(NOTE: I guess you could switch two RCA channels on the APOX-IS1 if you didn't mind sharing grounds. but the same rule applies as above)

Robert, I'm not quite sure I understand what you doing.
but maybe this will help.
Each APOX-IS1 board is meant to switch 4 inputs to a single channel (one speaker). If you want more than 4 inputs going to 1 speaker, than you can stack up the boards, and connect the board together with three wires. Then you would use only 1 of the outputs on one of the boards. (Also for the boards whose outputs are not used, you can remove the Home theater bypass relays)

So in conclusion, for each speaker you need at least 1 APOX-IS1 board.
If you need more than 4 inputs for 1 speaker. You can stack boards for up to 32 inputs per 1 speaker (and you would use only 1 output on one of the boards.)

Yes, thats possible.

I hope that helped

Craig,

Thanks; it did help.

The only matter that's not clear is if you are using 2 boards for one speaker, in order to have 8 inputs, and wish to use two outputs, could this be done?

The scenario is one XLR output goes to one of the main speakers, the second output via an RCA goes to a subwoofer. The sub has an integral amp and crossover and I was going to passively use a High Pass filter on the XLR output.

Thanks, Robert
