Reference DAC Module - Discrete R-2R Sign Magnitude 24 bit 384 KHz

Had some spare time. Made a couple of quick measurements of the dam..
This is still a dam1021 rev1 0.02% version with the vref mods.
In a cabinet with a rpi3b+ direct coupled (i2s) to it. Files used are made by REW, 24bit.

Some measurements with buffered outputs (rca)

1khz buffered

1khz unbuffered. (not able to reach 1dBFS here). A bit better
1khz_rpi_i2s_unbuffered_2.jpeg

12khz tone. This is from rpi i2s coupled to the dam. Not much sign of jitter.

I got higher noisefloor with the xlr measurements because of different interface used....

Here is Sorens original measurement from his site.

Here is my take.

Looks similar?

BTW: Finally after almost 5 years I think (or was it 4?) it is in a box of its own.

I have the rev1 modded and the latest rev7,
I find the rev7 the better sounding, it gives you a better insight in that layered 3D soundstage.

The rev7 contains a lot of important improvements:
  • separate clock power supply
  • reclocking after the FPGA
  • vref power supply with opamp and transistor buffer
  • clock drives the shift registers directly
  • ...
agree, same experience for v7 ( in comparison with v4)

1. i did not expect so many positive changes in sound from changing the board version
2. more transparency in sound, purity, clarity
3. sounds are more separated and layered

Soren, excellent progress!

ps.. I have been doing mods for many years, like many here, and so far there is an impression that no mods can achieve such progress

Hello all,

I plan to begin my DAC build DAM1021 rev 7 and wanted to know what is the voltage that can be applied. I saw Soekris mention optimal is +/-9V.

Can I apply higher voltage, like say +/-12V? Also, what is the best input board to use with this DAC?

Please help me with these details as the thread is very long and may be these details are buried in there somewhere.

Thanks
Balaji

How different v7 to v5? Thank you.

i do not have v5.

yes

Power input+-8-15V DC max 5W, Typ 2W

Also, what is the best input board to use with this DAC?
jlsound board is nice. Lampizator uses in all DACs, including those for several tens of thousands of dollars..

Have you compared rev 7 to a rev 4/5 with capacitors added before and after the clock regulator? That's what made the biggest difference in my build (apart from stopping the clock adjustments).
yes, I did it a long time ago. but I won’t say that I noted a very positive thing from this mod.

Feature request, pretty please.... (1021, 1121)

- Use one of the free pins to stop the clock control - like after +++. To be connected to low (or high?) via a simple on/off switch.

By this, no "computer" and/or USB dongle is needed to stop the clock... just a breaking switch and a couple of wires...

Thanks! 🙂

+1

@soekris Soren plzzz... great feature for our community!

Continuing a bit.
FW: 1.23 stock filter responses.
16/44.1 and 16/48

BTW: Noticed some more "jitter" spikes (12khz test) with FW:1.23 vs 1.21... (24bit) Not much though. Could be a measurement issue.

Hello . i have dam 1021 ver3. And have problem with locking. Usb interface is jlsound. When plaing on pc, by foobar for example. When i stop or pause music on more than 12 -15sekands and play again i can see that dams led is blinkig for some secands and music plays after 5 -7 sec. On coaxial it looks same. Try to changes firmware and filterd, even old 0.99. With no luck. I can say that sametimes it plays normaly, and dont unlock on stop or pause. Any idea what do do?
