XLR in and out
Pedro,
Your amp looks great but how can you build Aleph 5 without Balanced input?! At least I don't see it in the picture that you posted. You will eventually build a BOSOZ (with balanced output) if you don't have it already, right?

I understand that. I don't quite see why you did not have the XLR jack installed now rather than later.

hey here is a question. how do you use both i see on some amps they have rca and xlr wouldent you have to remove the cover and put a link it so that you can use either one or the other witch will be a pain in the but.
After reading that thread http://www.diyvideo.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6832&highlight=balanced+line I don't think we can blame Pedro for not including balanced input on his amp. 😉
BTW, quite a number of amps, even in $20,000 price range don't have balanced inputs.

Pedro,
nice looking amp!
Concerning the hot inner and cold outer heatsinks:
Why don´t you mount your transistors on a fat bar of aluminium (say 10x50 mm) that runs over all of the sinks? This way the heat transfer to the outer sinks will be a lot better and the whole amp will be cooler (or you can turn up the bias......)

U can build the Aleph 5 with balance inputs. Just buy a pair of female XLR plugs (with the IN - and gnd connected) and plug it in when u are using unbalance input (RCA). Remove the plugs when u are using the XLR input.JasonL said:hey here is a question. how do you use both i see on some amps they have rca and xlr wouldent you have to remove the cover and put a link it so that you can use either one or the other witch will be a pain in the but.
fcel,
I use mostly TT source, and my preamp(AudioNote preamp kit) doesn't have xrl outputs, so...
I really don't need at this time balanced inputs on aleph.
wuffwaff,
now the amp is at 49ºC, and still in testings. If I like what I ear, I'll not change it. As for the bias increase, I dunno...
My other amps, SOZ and Audio Note Kit one, (the last I use for high freqs) have 5W and 8W, and I feel very confortable in those power range. this one has 60W.
Lets see what comes when I make a side by side test.
here is a pic of the (almost) final stuff.

Hello Pedro,
your amp looks great ! I concur with wuffwaff and highly recommend to use some massive aluminum bar to connect your heatsinks to better distribute the heat.
For a platform I would recommend some nice stone. Btw,you could replace the top cover with a solid piece of aluminum that you mount with some spacers in order to get some ventilation. With a solid cover you prevent most dust problems.
Regards, Andreas

ARAD,
thanks,
the dust cover is a very good point.
I never thought about it. Let's see what i can do about it.

Hey Jason, I finished my Aelph 5 stereo Chassis, just need to anodize the Heat sinks Black. Top and bottom will be clear anodize like the corner posts and the screw covers. It started out as A75 ST, then Aelph 2 ST, now Aelph 5 ST.
What do you think?
What do you think?
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
Are you shure you not going to turn it into Zen ST?😉
Nice job BTW. Where are you doing anodizing?

Thanks Peter, I have the contact information at work, we use them all the time, but the name escapes me. There is a minimum fee of $100 so I want to finish the Chassis's for my Aelph 1.2 Mono Blocks and for my Stereo AV800 (Aussie Amplifiers).
I should be able to get all my anodizing done in one shot for about $100 to $150 based on thier quote.
By the way you like the feet? They are race bearings with a 1/4 - 20 threaded hub. Got them from Active Surplus, all Stainless nice and clean. Ball bearings make good isolators due to the multiple but very small contact areas. Perfect for sitting on carpet, I would not reccomend them for hard surfaces though.

Bearings
I didn't noticed them at first. Nice use of surplus materials.😉
My place charges about the same for anodizing. It's called Holly's Anodizing and is somwhere at Finch and Hwy 400 area.

Coulomb,
nice amp and very nice feet.
Just what I need for my aleph 5.
exactly what are those race bearings? I must see If i can find such a thing down here

They are like little wheels, they bolt to a chassis and run along a raceway. They are used in place of sliders where larger loads exist. If you were to buy them from a company like SKF I imagine they would be anywhere from $10 to $20 each CAD. I bought mine new but surplus for $2.00 CAD Ea.
BTW Peter, Progressive Anodizers.
Anthony
Thanks for the compliments on the Aelph 5 Chassis, I will post some picks of the interior when it is completed.
