Oke,an other one that will save you a lot of time and frustration.
If you make a PCB and you want to drill the holes.
Don,t measure but use kids clay.
That was a good tip but then I can bet that it only works with red clay .

Love these ideas Democles! Thanks!
I think it is also a brilliant idea to use an ic saddle as a socket for those really cheap socketless tubes. Good for you
Yes thanks, but you have to practise your soldering skills.
Too much heath and buy buy IC saddle
Nice idea with the clay. I've used paint before but it's messy.
Usually I just mark one hole, and mark the others to it by eye. Usually I'm close enough to bolt everything up.
To much work
And pass the ,,usually,,
Green clay works best.

I like high-vis so orange will it be
I've been looking at 4U 19" subracks as a way of making an amplifier look tidy on the outside if there's a lot of messy wiring, nuts and bolts etc. in the construction. RS Online sell a 4U chassis in the UK quite cheap and I'm tempted.
What are your views of completely enclosing a valve amp? Not very popular I imagine, but it would be tidy.

Hi andyjevans,
looks a nice rack cabinet, I used recently this cabinet 19" (W) x 5.1875" (H) x 13.1875"(D)3U Rack Mount Cabinet Enclosure ( RC3120D ) | eBay
and I am very happy with it, lots of ventilation but is a 3U I know the vendor have also the 5U version but not the 4U so is up to you, here some picture of my project a 10 band EQ all tube.....all the best

If you're thinking of putting all the tubes inside a rack case, I'd suggest looking for 5U or 6U instead unless you're making a preamp. The other option is to mount the tubes sticking out of the back of the chassis like these guys...

Thanks for the ideas, guys. One good reason to fully enclose a valve amp is when you use valves with top caps. You have to put some kind of case around those for safety reasons. They'd fit inside a 4U chassis. That's about as tall as I would want to go. 6U is absolutely huge.
6U is huge, but 4U will probably require fan cooling.
I wouldn't think you'll need fan cooling. The top plate will be mesh. The bottom plate could be as well. Could make some ventilation holes in the back plate but I wouldn't think that's necessary. Just keep the output tubes and rectifier away from the side walls. Haven't tried yet, though. I have all the parts so I'll rig something up and try it out. Lots of nice rails and plates to screw together like Meccano. Love it!
