Peerless XLS 12" designs

I've hunted around and figured out that a good Peerless 12" will work well in a small box so am happy to buy one. I'm not good at modelling subs so will end up copying someone’s design or going off the recommendations of forum members. The problem is I don't know which Peerless 12" to get and whether or not to get a PR as well.

My only real determining factors are size (2 - 2.5ft) and good for Home Theatre (low frequency). I have small main speakers so want good reproduction up to 150Hz too. This is my first sub project so don't want it to be ported.

Is it best (safest) to stick with the 830500 and a 12" PR?
I can't find any designs on this other than below which is very vague.

Does anyone have links to projects like this or similar.

Thanks

Good idea to search the forum first !

You probably did not or missed it.
Here is a similar request with some replies.

I did not like any of the passive radiators I heard. I guess they were not set up well or had some other problems. However every bass reflex sub with the 830500 sounded very good. But the choice is left to you. Each type of box has its own plus and minus points. Look at the application link in the thread mentioned above.

Thanks ashok but I did search and found all the articles displayed by other forum members and also the d-s-t site itself but they are either for different applications (two PR's or two subs) or the d-s-t site is very vague.

Considering that the manufacturer recommends a configuration of 1x12" sub + 1x12" PR I would have expected to see more sites out there of people who have built this. I can't find any.

Anyone built this configuration?

Contact me if you need info on this subwoofer, unfortunately the above page is in Dutch.

Hi SSassen,

That seems interesting and just the thing I'm thinking of ....(I'm trying to find some project to use 2X XLS12" and a plate amp. in one box and without any PR's ) you have more here

but i can't understeand Dutch so if that is the configuration I'm looking for I would appreciate all the info i can get :smash:

There is something about it here but it's only a kit....

The thing is that there is some good sites/projects but they all use 10" XLS for that combo -like this :xeye:

but i'f you are handy with WinISD you can use the sites to get a picture and ....

make a box bigger for 12" to fit.... 😀

I'm joking but i hope you understeand me 😱

Your'e kinda cute, in a reddish way . .

Bac OT:

Wired in series or parrallel ?😱

Why not have 2 separete boxes - spread the room modes, and spread the amp loads 😎

I don't want to mess with Sheld's thread but i hope he will forgive me :dead:

Bottom point is :

two boxes are allways bigger then one and it is easier to make one then two....and more important if i have one plate amp i can't make two subs 😉

second...I have 900€ for my sub and I need to spread the money smart and I'm looking do something what i can get throught some stores in this country...
I'm affraid that i don't have much choices...

*One store can order XLS 12"+PR for 400€
*Second one can order 2 x XLS 12" for 400€

so I'm thinking that it would be wise to take a second choice

or even give 510€ for 2xXXLS 12" designed for potr box use get myself out of this trouble putting big port in a small box with XLS as I don't want to use any PR or go with special active stuff ...

offcoures as there as no any 4Ohm XLS two would go in parallel but i'm not shure would Hypex DS 4.0 be enought power for that combo (btw, that's the only plate amp I can get here and it would be 450€ )

secend choice what i can get would be Behringer A500 for 250€ (I don't like the way of cooling of pro. models) but then I would need some active crossover :xeye:

like you can see I'm in a mess of choices becouse I not following some project :bawling:

I did 🙂 and they (I built two, one active and one passive or slave) shake the walls. They allow a fairly compact enclose (42.7L) and once run in, play very loud and very deep...

I've got the 8 OHM models connected in Parallel to a 350 watt sub amp...

If cash is tight and your room isn't very big, will store #2 sell one XLS for 200 (or close to it). Max SPL of one I recall is c 115 dB.
Have u modelled them in Unibox?

With 12", 12 mm Xmax,
Two = law of diminishing returns, aka overkill.

rick57,

Are you familiar with basic electroacoustic principles? I.e. putting two identical drivers in a box and connecting them in parallel will boost output by 6dB. Hence the needed amplifier power to reach the same SPL is 1/4 of the original needed input.

Hence there's more SPL whilst requiring less amplifier power, to me this looks like a win-win situation at the cost of an extra driver and a somewhat larger box. This has nothing to do with diminishing returns.

Hi Sander

Yes, possibly not as well as you, but perhaps vice versa with the LoDR.
I wasn’t suggesting there is no benefit with two, but it’s in reality likley only a little better sound quality than one driver.

Is needing a smaller amp - but possibly with a better power supply much of an advantage, if the room is not big, and you may have to pay 200E more for the extra driver?

And while power needs are down, can the amp handle the change in ohm load?

Cheers

Richard

Well, thing is I'm not rich enough to build second sub when i see that i don't like first one or that it isn't enought ....so I want to build something mean and nasty 😉 from the start with all i can get (or spend all money 🙄 )

you see, it is easier NOW to pay some extra if it seems a better choice then later live with regrets that thing could have been better
...and when i see that i can get XLS 12"+PR for the same price as 2x XLS12" it's normall that i consider that a better option in the point of long term investment 😉

I would consider myself out of my mind if I would pay 140€ for PR (when i can afford 60 more for a driver) even if it means that i have something what works best for shure/working project....

but as XLS are made to work with PR's i'm stuck with "my combo" 🙄

If I can make them 'work' in ported box i will get more distortion then closed or closed with PR but maybe using those two will get me something usefull becouse less stressed driver, less excursion, less distortion even if it means MORE stressed plate amp (Hypex DS 4.0 ) becouse parallel conection ?
