I build vented so I don't need equalisation but the majority of sealed do. Bass boost in a plate amp is different to the Linkwitz Transformer.... have a look at the article at ESP. You don't want the bass boost in the plate amp as it gives a hump and when combined with room gain... yuk.

A sub just needs a reasonably smooth roll off from about 50Hz or so to be successful IMO so it can work in with the room.

I haven't heard too many complaints from the users / builders of the LT and the only way you find out in this game is to build and listen.

Have fun.

out of curiousity, how could i measure room gain in my room? Could i use an spl meter and measure my subwoofer sitting in the middle of the oval near my house, then measure again in my listening room and calculate the relative difference? would that work?

Yeah you can measure your subwoofer outside of your home away from any walls.

Then do the same thing inside your room and compare the curves to know the room gain.

Remember the room gain changes alot with the position of your subwoofer inside your room, you'll get higher gain in corners, then near walls.

Just to repport back

i'm done with one of my subs now, the critical q subwoofer and i'm not impressed.
Shure, joe says the sub isn't meant to pust large PSL's, but i deman i LITLE from a sub, and this dont do the trick i'm sorry to rapport.
i hope things will improve when i get the other one built.

it sound just like most other subs i'v heard, nothing special here either.

Hi

i'm not using it for AV, it's a music only sub, but still, it should have the ability to make a litle noise! i think this sub will actually have problems complementing my low xmax low efficency bookshelf speakers.

and no, i used a 300W plate amp i friend of mine had, and EQ'd it through my laptop. so i had a pretty straight frequency response, roomgain not taken into acount.

In both instances, I calibrated my system to +75dB/CH using a SPL and the test tines of the AVR. I then choose a comfortable volume -20dB worked well for me, and played CD after CD. I wans't even in the room for the most part, so if it didn't sound it's best, I wasn't going to hear it.

But now, they truely are amazing...

the sub has been allowed to play in for 2 months or so now, and i'm a lot more pleased with it now.

I recived one of those cervin vega plate amps with the plate crossover that apex jr sells for 50bucks, and straightened the output flat, and the sound is something completly different now.

the sub resides under my desk, fased towards the wallso the magnet wont get funky with my monitor. it handles the placement really well without getting fat and whooly. it's clean and precice and otherwise well behaved. well defined, i feel it compliments the rest of my system really well. dont come close to a good set of headphones as SQ i concerned though. but that's probably the rest of my systems fault.

Well, the 12" XLS box I made is a complete success!

A 34cm sealed cube (~30L internal) made of 19mm mdf, no eq required. Ok, it struggles to pump out anything lower than 20Hz, but accentuates brilliantly the musical subtleties of any jazz music cd i try. I found it integrates well into any system using the custom 200W plate amp from stones audio. The XLS can handle the full volume of this amp in this configuration, just reaching max excursion, and pumps out enough sub-bass for my liking, so I don't have to worry about tearing the driver at max volume. Perfect size to take to mates' house parties!! Shakes windows on dvds!

If you are interested in crystal clear bass reproduction, rather than thumping SPL, this could be the project for you!

I'm now saving for my next diy project: nice sounding 2-way speakers + decent amp 150Wx2 to complement this nice bass I'm hearing.

Just finished my XLS project

Talking about the XLS subwoofer.
I think it's an excellent woofer. Superb for small closed box construction.
I started out with a 19 l box, but changed to a 23 l to get max execution with the 400 W I've got.
Have eq'ed it for 25 Hz, Q = 0,5. Sounds great.

I use it to stereo, as it can't relly compete with my two JBL 12 inch in 120 l reflex subs for movies.

But I gues most people would happily live with it for movies 🙂

I think it is one of the best price performance sub's out there in the uper range low distortion segment.
Highly recommended 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎

I built a couple of passive radiator subs with these

Here are two that I made with 32mm MDF and 6mm ply veneer. Passives in the back. 8 Ohm 12 inch XLS in the front and the heavier weight passives (I think they were 600 gm). Driven by a Crest Audio 300W/8ohm power amp with a fc = 75Hz Low pass Butterworth and a Fc = 17 Hz 36 dB/octave high pass turntable rumble filter from ESP - both at line level. Excursion is always within limits at full power. Boxes wobble a bit with movement of passive radiators.

I can't remember the internal volume, but it was done according to one of the manufacturer's examples. The sound is pretty ordinary, so I just use them to augment the front left and right channels for movies.
