Hi

Ooops!
Premature post above - disregard!!
Here it is:
Just been running some numbers thru WinISD on a some Peerless woofers.
850136 8" CSX - F3=87hz - Vb=19L - Fb=65
850490 8" HDS - F3=59hz - Vb=16L - Fb=48
830491 8" XLS - F3=43hz - Vb=34 - Fb=38
Now, even if you mess around with the Vb and Fb things don't get much better. The response really gets outa shape.
Anyone have a working knowledge of these drivers? Especially, the 850136?
I may just have to go with the Vifa P21 - you can mess around with that puppy and it's response stays in great shape.
Am I missing something?
Mos
BTW, the TS params I'm using are from Stones Sound Studio in Australia--but the Peerless specs wouldn't make much difference anyway.

Strange, I used the HDS 182 (6,5") and it shure isn't lacking bass. I like it's bass a lot better then it's midrange.
The 8" should go very low.
Peerless is best known for it's excellent bass drivers.
In my next project I would go for a three way with scan-speak tweeter/bass units and a Peerless for the bass. Maybe the 10" CSX.
But you are somewhat thinking in the same direction aren't you?
Hi Peter
Mmm, it just seems strange that all of the Peerless 8" I mentioned exhibited a higher than expected F3. Yes, these units seem to be spoken of highly for their bass response, but let's face it, I've got to use the data the software gives me otherwise I'm flying blind and the data says they don't go low.
I hope someone can set me straight with some actual figures.

Peerless bass shy? ...noway !!!
I agree with DiyPeter, Peerless woofers have a really nice bass responce and sound great (for what they are.)
Your figures from winisd seem very strange, (unless u used a closed box design? ? ?)
BBPro indicates the opposite, infact you can work the box to anything you like...thats the mark of a good driver...ok, it more suits a Vented or Passive Radiator box, did you do a closed box? cuz those figures...dont make sence as per a vented enclosure.
here is a 2 min quick design to compare your figures.

Hi again Mo, i really think its the program your using, because that peerless driver has a resonant frequency of 28.2 Hz, thats quite low.
Which means you could easily tune a box under that freq.
which my figures in BBPro indicate.
The driver in question only suits a vented or a Passive Radiator design.
you have fihure indicitive of a closed box.
in any event, what dimensions did you want the box and what tuning did you want?
anonau.

One more thing, the Peerless 8" CSX is a good woofer for a two way if you can cross over low. It makes an excellent bass driver for a small three way tower. With the port dimensions you pretty much have to have to run the port vertically and put a bend in it, or exit out the bottom with the port.
The reason to go with the Peerless CSX drivers versus the Vifa competition is the aluminum faraday ring in the motor structure that lowers distortion quite a bit. The CSX drivers tend to be much cleaner at higher volumes than Vifa standard line drivers.

What software
Hi Scott,
What software were you using for the box design. I noticed that it took into account the room dimensions and speaker location.
Thanks.
Ashok.

Hi Ashok
I believe the software he used came from Adire Audio's site (sorry - too lazy to find and paste the URL to the zip, but have a look around http://www.adireaudio.com
PS: Buy a Shiva when you are there - great sub (sorry for the shameless plug - but Adire do make great subs!)
Dave.

Actually I own the full version of the sofware in question which is LSPCad. I didn't realize Adire still offered a demo version at their site.

Re: What software
You can, but for the graphs displayed I have that feature turned off. When it's on you see the nulls and boost developed by the room. It's very handy for sub placement.

Hi Dave and Scott.
Thanks for the info. I will try out the demo software . I must try out the speaker location section. This can get very interesting.
Thanks.

Ok, thanks for everyone's comments.
Here's my WinISD output for the 850136.
Please keep in mind that the params are from Stones Sound in Australia. They have measured these drivers out of the box (just as they should be). However, the actual Peerless specs don't change the graph that much.

And, yep, the box was vented.
Quite frankly, if I'm seeing an F3 of 45+ I'm thinking it's not low enough for and 8" in a threeway that's going to handle dome power.
Correct me if I'm wrong but an F3 of 40 wouldn't be be considered low bass even in musical terms, and it's for audio that I want to build these, not for very low movie effects.

Mos:
How much bass were you seriously expecting from a box barely over half a cubic foot volume?
I might point out that the lowest note on a bass guitar is about 42 Hz. There are many speakers on the market that go that low and sound very good indeed. In fact, I would say that 42 Hz is the highest F3 that a speaker could have and not necessarily need a subwoofer, since most of the notes are covered. Of course, it's not a bad idea to have a sub anyway.
If you want to increase the size of the box to more realistic levels, try the big brother of the CSX 8 incher-the CSX 10" Make a 2 cu ft, (56 or 60 L) box, tune to 28 Hz or so, and you are good down to 30 or 32 Hz. It has an extremely long throw, (±9 mm), which is considerably longer than almost any woofer available, (except for the big superheavyweights like Stryke, Shiva, etc.). And it's cheap-in America, it's available for $60 or so.

Yes, I a appreciate the vb for the CSX 8" is small, but if yoy increase the box volume the graph gets out of shape, and, I did sort of expect an F3 of at least 40 or the high thirties. I actually thought the rolloff would start in the low 40s and go down from there. You see, I had messed around for ages with the Vifa P21 and it was very forgiving of drastic vb changes. I guess I was just dissapointed that the well regarded Peerless units seem to not go that low.
Thing is, I'm concerned that I'd build a box with the 136 in it and be always wishing it could go a bit deeper, and I don't want to build subs--a left and right speaker will do me fine 🙂
And, ep, the CSX 10" is a good unit. I've modelled it for a side firing configuration with a Peerless 5" and tweeter on the front baffle.
