Pedja Rogic 1541A DAC Custom-Wound Transformer European Union Group Purchase

Hi All,

those lucky enough to to soon be receiving one of Pedja's 1541A DAC pcbs might be interested in this GP. I have had a quote from Airlink Transformers for a custon-wound toroid for this DAC. I specified potting and banding. Hopefully dispatched to you direct from the factory.

Here is the info:

I am looking for a quote, please, on a specially wound toriodal
transformer. I have been part of a DIYAudio group purchase for some 1000 VA toroids about 9 months ago, and will hopefully be able to get 10 plus orders for this particular spec. The application is a high-quality Digital to Analogue converter and the windings are as such:

Transformer TR1 secondary windings

#nominal voltage current rating actual circuit requirement
1 7-9V 1A 20mA
2 7-9V 1A 13mA
3 7-9V 1.5A 27mA
4 7-9V 1.5A 37mA
5 21-22V 2A 40mA
6 17-18V 1.5A 15mA
7 17-18V 1.5A 15mA
8 7-9V 2A optional, for a reclocker

The 7-9V seconadries I would like to specify as 9V. The 21-22V as 22V, and the 17-18V as 18V.

In summary, five secondaries of 9V, two of 18V and one of 22V. I would require the toroid potted and banded as well, please.

No rush on this. I would appreciate if consideration be given to
dispatch to individuals ex-works. I will coordinate payment and
dispatch details.

Rgds

Airlink Transformers

So, what do you think?? Can anyone improve on that?

Cheers

Jon 🙂

Do yourself a favour and stay clear of Airlink transformers. They have extrordinary bad service and a real bad relation to warranty issues and specs. As soon as you've paid, any problem that may occour....is your problem, they don't care. I fought them for several month over a couple of errors obviously made by them, which they didn't want to correct.

This is the general attitude of Airlink, not just one careless person.

There are other transformer manufacturers in the world, no reason to support a company that behaves like that.

Magura🙂

Hi Magura,

cast your mind back to 5th Oct....... 😉 I haven't had them chase me to follow up the quote, mind you.

A decent supplier at the right price would be excellent. I'm more than happy to try another couple of local companies for quotes. With the GBP and Euro so strong against the USD, it might also benefit us to look further afield than the UK or EU. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to list them. I have emailed Plitron and VM and we'll see what they say.

I have also just had a spending moratorium strongly suggested by Mrs C, and I have agreed to it. Therefore my limit is somewhere around 50 Euros (slush money) for the trafo - unless I can do some window-cleaning on the side!!! 😀

Cheers

Jon

Update

Antrim have called me to confirm the spec and will be quoting in a few days - got 10 prototype orders in front of ours.

They will be more expensive than Airlink, but I believe the trafos will be quieter.

More as it comes.

Jon

Nice one Jon, keep us updated
My dac has been up and running for a few weeks, I'm currently using separate transformers but a single one would be better
I'm also struggling for a case, the dac and transformers are bolted to a piece of wood

Trafo Numbers

Errr.....not quite sure. About 6 or so at the moment.

The quotes are all designed around the 10+ unit price break.

Antrim are going to email me the quote - I assume VM and Plitron will do the same. Not expecting anything for a few days though. Sadly no longer have access to a computer midweek, so I'll update at weekends.

Cheers

Jon

PS How does your DAC sound? I have been a little side tracked with the TX102 stuff, so need to get on with this project soon-ish.

Hi Jon,

The dac sounds excellent, to be honest I can't fault it🙂
The BG caps take some time to burn in though.
All the resistors in the signal path are Caddock mk132 apart from the 1k5 for the AD844 which is Caddock TFO20, I tried Rikens in that position but I much prefer the TF020.
I also use the discrete buffer instead of the AD844's internal one and the dac chip is TDA1541S2

Antrim Quote

OK, I have received the Antrim quote. No word yet from VM or Plitron. All prices plus VAT. The more expensive trafo is the encapsulated version.

Pse have a close look at this spec to see if I have missed anything - It looks pretty good to me. The postage of 25 GBP plus VAT to me and onward post AND packaging looks like a false economy when you can have your trafos delivered to your door for 7.50 GBP.

I am considering paying for a prototype to test with one of the DIYers who has got his DAC up and running, before we go firm on the order - if that is the way it turns out. Any comments?

Have a look and tell me what you think....... Anyway, here is the info:

Additional Information:
Approved to EN 61558-1:1997, UL506 & C22.2
A selected, impregnated core is used at reduced flux density for low mechanical noise. Wound for low stray field.
Potted into a (grey) plastic shell – see 7452GP for a cheaper version with a potted centre.
Connectors are not fitted as we do not stock male bullets as these are normally used on car connectors (did you mean bootlace ferrules)? If we do fit connectors then flexible leadouts will be required. Unfortunately the fitting of flexible leads (20 in this case) will substantially increase stray field (and the prices).

Approx Weight: 2.6kg Approx Dimensions: 125 x 53mm
(these exclude leadout bulges)
Mounting Method:
central M6 clearance hole

Price per transformer:

10-24: £35.88
25-99: £32.04
100+: £25.68

Despatch: prototype: 10-14 days from receipt of order
quantity: 3-5 weeks from receipt of order

Unless otherwise specified, all secondary voltages are on load values.
Please note we always start manufacture of a production batch with a 5% overbuild to allow for possible rejects. All transformers passing final test (ordered quantity ± 5%) will be despatched and invoiced. If, however, you can afford losses, then please specify the start quantity, e.g. to order the minimum batch size specify "start at 10 off ", otherwise we will start at 11 off.
A prototype is recommended but not compulsory.
Prices exclude VAT and delivery charges. Quotation is valid for 30 days.

Hi Henk,

I am considering the more expensive encapulated version. There is also a WIKI on the componenjt parts for this DAC - when I do my ordr at some stage inthe future, I'll place the part numbers in the WIKI. If you have some good thoughts about a particular component, please place details in the WIKI. This is just to help newcomers like me to select parts of a quality to match this DAC.

I too have an S2 awaiting!! 😀

An alternative offer......

Hi All,

diyAudio user Lupulroz has kindly offered the following: 🙂

> Hello,
> if it's any help - I can do your transformer for 25 euro + shipping.
> I made a lot of custom requests for diy-ers from the forum.
> Orientative prices at http://www.rockna-line.com/toroids.htm

>For potted core & mounting kit included price is 30 euro / piece.

>Shipping to UK for 15 pcs. (approx. 30 kg package) is 140 euro.

Shipping to a single UK destination is the same price as would be for individual delivery from Antrim in the UK - so there will be additional postage to pay. I can see how much a 2kg parcel will be for the UK and EU. Don't forget to add VAT to all prices quoted in this thread - UK Customs will add it to any imports and it will be charged by any UK-based company.

Have a look at the Rockna site, have a think about the sums and let me know your thoughts.

Cheers

Jon

WIKI

Hi All,

the limited feedback I have received points towards the Antrim trafos. Prices are more than the kind offer from Lupulroz, but the advantage to me is that I don't have to re-post an order to all involved.

I'll get a WIKI up tonight. The spec is for an encapsulated trafo. Shipping will be ex-works to your door. I'll have a word with them about how we are going to pay. For EU buyers, we can come to an arrangement using PayPal perhaps.

I'm not intending to order for a week or so - just to let the numbers hopefully rise. We need at least 10 to make this work.

Cheers

Jon
