Paul Carmody Carrera Build

If you want to "brighten" the high-end, I would "short or remove" the 1r resistor right before the tweeter, this should give you about 1-2db increase in the tweeter level. You could use a jumper wire to short it out, and listen to it and decide if you make it permanent.

If you can take measurements, you can always import them into WinISD, or Xsim and see exactly what changes to the XO will do to the FR.

It also looks like you changed the width of the cabinet, which shouldn't cause a problem, unless it counteracts with the tweeter or XO as Paul designed. Not sure, would need measurements to verify - IMO would make a small difference.

smallangryboy.

Looks like you have made the cabinet slightly narrower at 180 mm vs the 203 mm (8") that is in the original cabinet design. It is important that the width be kept the same as what the designer put in the plans, as the BSC is calculated taking cabinet width into consideration. Looks like no major harm done, as you are not saying that the bass sounds thin.

Can you put the cabinets on top of a short stand or books to bring the tweeters up to ear height and listen if they still sound overly polite?

Thanks I'll look at that. I'm also chatting to Paul to see if he can suggest some tweaks to try. I took a calculated gamble on the width of the baffle and I don't think it has any discernible impact on the sound compared to the test cabinets I built to Pauls spec.

That's a good idea I'll also try that if I make any changes to the crossover. The bass sounds the same as the test cabs I built to Pauls spec so the baffle width in this instance hasn't had a detrimental effect and in fact it's a bit tighter as I also made the tuning with a little more traditional slope rather than the bump that Paul used and works well in my listening room.

Getting the tweeters up to ear height by lifting the cabs should be simpler than modding the XO.

Also good to remember that applying one tweak at a time and observing the results will be more helpful in tracking the differences from each of them. 🙂
