Hi, I am partway through building a pair of carmody's carreras, however I have changed his cabinet design externally, while keeping the same internal dimensions. Since the rear of the cabinet is much thicker than that of the original cabinet design, do I have to extend the port tube to keep the same length of tube exposed in the cabinet, or should I keep the total length the same, which would mean the tube will protrude less into the interior of the cabinet.
Thanks
Thanks
I am building these too.

[image]Image:Carrera|none[/image]This is the third pair of Paul's speakers I've put together, and they have consistently beaten my expectations. They all have a very similar tone and balance which just seems to work with every genre, and he somehow manages to recreate this sound no matter how expensive or budget friendly the drivers are.
As my final venture into speaker building, I really wanted to push the boat out with these, and the cost of the parts shows. By comparison, the rest of my setup is very feeble, with the amp costing the less than just one of the Scan Speak woofers. As ridiculous as this sounds, at least I can rest assured that I will never have to buy another pair of speakers, even if it takes me decades to bring everything else up to the same standard.
After a very long 6 months, they are finally done!
Here's just a few photos of the build...

They look amazing great job . Thanks for posting your long and on going project and your thoughts on your speaker build. Your speakers are so classy looking. Please keep us updated on your systems up grades. Cheers Jeff
Thanks Jeff, I'm glad you like them. You really can't go wrong with Carmody's designs whatever the price point. As for building the cabinets, I've learned that there really is no substitute for time and dedication.
Thanks also to 2bz, who has recently built a very nice pair following his progress at the same time really helped.

Your welcome. It's really nice to see each persons build on the forum no matter if it's a fullrange or a multi way to a open baffle to a awesome two way. Jeff
So how do these sound? I've seen a few build threads on these in various forums but strangely every single one leaves out how they actually sound. Care to enlighten us?
For me, the main things which stand out about the carreras is the clarity of the OW1s. Highs like cymbals etc.. are beautifully crisp and detailed, allowing you to hear things in the music you may have never before. Meanwhile, the scan speak woofers are warm and have exceptional bass, comparable with most floorstanders, yet are refined enough not to overpower the rest of the music, as some woofers can.
If you have heard Carmody's overnight sensations, these have a very similar tone and balance, but with crisper highs, warmer and more lifelike mids, and more bass. Overall, they do a great job of not drawing too much attention to themselves, and like any great speaker should, play any genre of music without fuss.
For me, they just tick every box, and are just an all round great set of speakers, which you just can't go wrong with.
Of course, I can only compare with what I have, and so someone else may have a different opinion.
Hope this helps.

Indeed it does, thanks. I have built the Overnight Sensations and his ZX Spectrums as well. I thought the OS were darling little speakers. The ZX was a bit darker sounding and I decommissioned them not long after their build. I have used a Revelator woofer in the "Invictus" I built and that was nice but thought the mids were a little wooly for my tastes. Yes a listen all day kinda sound but sometimes I like to hear something a bit more engaging.
I have never used the tweeter in the carrera but judging by its price it should be the Belle of the ball here. This particular woofe is supposed to be the best of the revelators too. Perhaps I just talked myself into building some as well. Hahahaha
My only concern is going from a 2-way with a 7" woofer to going to a 5.5" woofer. Hmmm decisions decisions.

I also went from a 7" two-way to the carreras, and I was worried that they would be underpowered in the bass department, however the difference was actually almost unnoticeable in most music. Somehow the revelators put out much more bass than their size would suggest, as you probably know. While I'm sure they can't go quite as low, or as loud as my old 7" floorstanders (core 2-way), they've handled everything I've thrown at them so far, and I've never looked back.
Being a paper cone woofer, I can see what you mean about the midrange. They are definitely warmer and more laid back than the aluminium coned overnight sensations, but it comes down to personal preference.

It's a variant of the Amiga, with a different tweeter. Great bass, sharp treble, but an almost non existent midrange at times in my experience. Not sure whether this is common on two ways with large woofers, or because the crossover point was so low.

Strange about that core 2-way. Maybe check the crossover and driver polarities? I've heard both of those drivers in a MTM design and heard no lack of anything really. Did you bring this issue up to Paul?
How good are the carreras at pulling the "disappearing act"? I once built a pair of Klang + Ton NADA speakers and sold them because they couldn't pull off this trick. Nothing bothers me more when speakers can't cast music into the room and away from the source. I've heard many lesser and many more expensive speakers than the NADAs pull this off, but in the end it wasn't something I was willing to just accept given the money spent and time invested.
By the way, I appreciate your replies to my questions. They're very helpful.

Although I don't own any speakers of similar price to compare with, by listening to other mid range speakers I have laying around, the carreras are in a different league in their ability to 'dissapear'. Unfortunately, because of the shape of my room, the speakers are only a few feet in front of me, and quite far apart, which is far from ideal, however there is a definite sense that the sound is radiating from the room instead of just directly from the speakers.
Although I cannot compare with your current setup, or even other speakers in the same price range, I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.

I would like to try this carrera with a scanspeak D 2010 851300 a cheaper clone and used in Spendor s100 some years ago. What do you think about ? Sorry for my english.
There is some information on using that tweeter as an ow1 replacement here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/mult...-scan-d2010-8513-65-alternative-hiquphon.html
It might work, but it's very likely that you would have to make some tweaks to the crossover.
