Diyiggy wondered what would work out at where, omni, cardioid, dipole, and I think it is mostly the applicagion and reality that dictates. For family living room there is no chance to put speakers one meter away from walls and listening chair in the middle, in which case open baffle speakers won't probably be the best for the situation, forced close to wall etc. Perhaps some cardioid or in-wall or infinite baffle stuff would work out better, be out of way and sound nice. Small bookshelf speakers are good because they are small and can go to bookshelf, probably cheap and easy, but for audio experience this is not ideal solution. Luckily we the interested and capable of DIY and reasoning can try and zone in for good sound over time while enjoying the hobby all the way 🙂 Some systems work out better than others, for any particular situation and application.
I believe its not missing any cover. Perhaps just a grille.Hi Adason,
Interesting design. Is the other sidewall (where the woofer baskets are visible) missing or maybe clear? Two woofers aligned 90deg like that would make about zero bass on the speaker mid/tweeter axis due to OB cancellation.
No, bass would not cancel each other. Remember Helsinky?
Interesting design. And it works. I heared it at the show long time ago.

OB needs room for sure. Omnis probably do. IME all speakers benefit from some space around them, but some styles do better than others near the wall. For family living room there is no chance to put speakers one meter away from walls and listening chair in the middle,
I've always been curious about the so-called pendant speaker. Hanging from the ceiling, there's no competition for floor space. Unsure if anyone has made a good sounding one; sealed, OB, electrostatic, DML, CBT array, etc. This picture from the web clearly shows an attempt at an omni unit, with a reasonable aesthetic appearance. For family living room there is no chance to put speakers one meter away from walls

I did that too. The office had 16 foot ceilings hung them in the reception area. Bronze ones like that. Had a 10” diySub on the floor.

Hanging OB is great!

I enjoy these every day. 😀 10" ADS woofer and TC7 fullrange (picture is prior iteration with TB W3-881SI).
I used MiniDSP 2x4HD for many months, then went to 1st order analog XO at ~425 Hz plus DSP EQ.
They are still fun to listen to.

It’s not that I don’t believe you but I know that when I am directly to the side of my OB speaker, the sound is very soft. Here is the polar pattern of a dipole:I believe its not missing any cover. Perhaps just a grille.

At 90 and 270 deg, the output goes to zero. I suppose if you don’t toe them in and you are 30 deg of the minimum axis, it’s actually the peak vs 0deg or 180deg.
Mine would tell me to move the equipment to the back wall, put a line between them so she could hang up laundry. She'd tell me the hanging laundry is the room treatment - helps with the reverberations.Tell the wife they are room treatments.
Yes - as long as the floor space is freed up.Does hanging magnepans count?
I'm imaging those in clear plexi! How do you keep them square to the room? Not seeing so many guy wires.Hanging OB is great!
Its missing tweeters in the middle. How about hanging Quads. Tell the wife they are room treatments.

The middle is plywood. The extensions were parts of a bus shelter,

Perhaps very nice, looks cool anyway 🙂 I guess it is rather rare thing try and get very good stereo sound with practical family space and 99.9% resort to all kinds of soubdbars and home pods and be happy with them. As any system would benefit optimal positioning I haven't been able to figure out better than some on wall solution, which leaves only the listening position at the mercy of practicality. Luckily my *** moves easier than any loudspeakers 😀 Walls are almost empty anyway.
Here is description of full mark levinson system from the time long long ago...How about hanging Quads. Tell the wife they are room treatments.

They are balanced just right by 18 gauge magnet wire wrapped around the… magnet. There’s about a 10 degree tilt downward toward the listening position. I have the coil and cap for each speaker resting on the cabinet to keep the suspended weight at a minimum. Every once in a while if I bump into one of them I’ll rotate it at the screw in the ceiling back to the proper alignment. Otherwise they stay put well on their own.I'm imaging those in clear plexi! I tuned them by ear with piCorePlayer’s ALSA EQ. It’s very low brow but turned out great. I may measure their response for the sake of curiosity.
