I saw your reference from the other thread. The parallel resistors to adjust the load on the regulator are not new (I remember doing this on the Spectral DMC-10 in the late 1970's). You need protection diodes or the regulators can get fried by reverse current if the supply discharges faster than the load. Nothing that special here. Its a good way to reduce the power dissipation of the regulators. However if the line voltage gets too high you will reverse the regulator which could fry it.
