it looks stylish...
Thanks! I try to make all this hifi stuff look good.
If I were building a sub to go under my computer desk for the little desktop speakers, I would not choose a 15 or 18" driver. A 6.5 or 8" would be a nice choice. For a full on music system, a driver that small would never be my first choice. Horses for courses.
yes of course. I agree. I'm just about done with a pair of 2 way speakers that use a 6.5" "subwoofer". They are for in my small office so they don't need to play loud. They aren't finished so they aren't pretty yet. The little driver is Dayton's 3" "full range" driver, crossed over at 500Hz to the "subwoofer"....

I knew something was wrong with this "PA". Or it was running active or the woofer's 95dB could not mate the 4x midwoofers. They fail from SPL "sickness" I think.like this one for instance...
Goldwood GW-18120 18" Deluxe PA Woofer 290-398
I used it for PA speakers for our music group
Audio Pages: PA speakers
Ideally one should biamp these speakers
Dave, the 12Pi-Sub (from PiSpeakers) is also a 2x12"LAB push-pull I think.
To compare 1sub and 4subs we can also check if the price of one accommodate the price for 4 drivers. And they are also of very good quality (the small ones) if they go as low (as was already said before), not only for the SPLx4.

Nice little calculator.
Makes it easy to see how current large Xmax small woofers can put out as much bass as the old small Xmax 15" drivers could.

Yes, the LF output of "weak" 15" drivers like the EVM-15B, JBL 130A, JBL 2220A, JBL E-130, E-140, all considered "woofers" back in the day can all be surpassed by just 2 modern 6.5" woofers.quote ....as old small Xmax 15" drivers could.
ehh, 3.3mm Xmax, thats a pretty 'weak' 15"

nice theory
dream on
but yeah, we might have totally different ideas about what bass means
its not all 'only' a matter of Xmax and SPL
Distortion should be around 10%(by definition) at Xmax for any well designed driver.Distortion?
Whether you use a 3.3 mm Xmax 15" driver, or two 8.8 mm Xmax 6.5" the distortion should be similar at the same SPL.
high Xmax is not neccessary a good thing...
question is how well the membrane follows the electrical signal
if one woofer is designed that for the same SPL it barely moves the membrane, it usually sounds better than the one which has to move membrane a lot
personal opinion anyway

To do what?and how many 5.5" would be needed ?
When it comes to LF reproduction, there is no replacement for displacement .
Whether one wants to achieve the same displacement required for the desired SPL using small drivers or large drivers depends on what the goals are.
...... depends on what the goals are.
how many parameters do we need fixed, to define the goal
Very nice, very true. That's how Focal is selling big time in that market. Many "small" woofers... Just right for me with a much easier cabinet assembly than for a single large driver.
I can find more distortion in the low end from a 8" than from a 10" (similar design, studio versions)... small difference (from Beyma specs) but noticeable, interesting and a good point to have in mind.Distortion?
I had the same argument with John Janowitz from AE. Sorry but I can not agree. If you don't measure or lab test, you will never know but guessing...Distortion should be around 10%(by definition) at Xmax for any well designed driver.

I have no idea what your goal is, or how many parameters you want fixed.how many parameters do we need fixed, to define the goal
The OP didn't seem to have a specific goal either.
I have satisfied my LF goals in my sailboat (for sale, by the way) with five six inch drivers, my travel trailer uses one 8", my shop uses three 12", my home stereo two 12", one 8" and one 15" (in three different rooms).
My various headphones have drivers ranging from 1/4" to 1.5".
My PA has alternately used four 15", eight 10", eight 12", and presently two 18".
All the different size speakers have a place, "horses for courses" as has been stated.
