OB "omni" experiment

Did some more testing - mostly placement.

I have not had any experience myself with Open baffle (only at shows), but have always heard they are difficult to place and not close to wall. You really have to experience it yourself. It's offcourse all true. The low freq simply sound weird close to the wall, but +1 meter from any walls it starts to be really good. If you don't have that kind of room, forget about open baffle.

They are not omni but definatly more than half omni. Right behind the speaker the highs are still omni, but some deep midrange is missing (below 400 Hz). It's still much better than my previous design, and I begin to like it a lot.
 
Finally found my measuring mic. Did some more tweeking, and it's very close now to be very good. I have som rattling at very low frequencies - below 25 Hz. I can hear it with test sweeps and very low church organ like the intro to Also sprach zarathustra. I'm not shure if it's the woofers ratling or cabinet or cables.

The room mode that I had with the other speakers at 50 Hz, are almost not existing, and I only have to make a minor adjustment to not have the annoing resonance at 50 Hz.

I finally had some time for some serious listeneing.
Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Tom Waits (early stuff), Bach 6 Cellosuites/Blöndahl Bengtsson.

I'm really pleased right no. There is almost no change in sound character when I move around the room. The stereopespective is solid. Especially on Tom Waits (Small Change), there are some intruments only in one channel and that is also how they are portraid on these speakers. I mis aboslutely nothing from my conventional front firing speakers. I build these speakers because I would like to have a more even spread of sound, and that is what I have.

The 4 10" woofers per side is also more than sufficient for Also Sprach Zarathrusta, at normal listening levels. I started out with a 35 Hz low cut, but removed it again.

Just had some more time to experiment. The integration is hard. I had to remove dipole artifacts quite dramatic. I had hoped for som soft adjustments. But, cleaning up over 300 Hz really helped a lot on overall sound. I started with crossing at 400 Hz, but that was to high.

This is how it looks right now. Measurements are raw - no smoothing and no gating. Measured 1 inch from cone.

160 degree measurements in normal listening room
1 meter almost from side (80 degree) - direct in front (red) - and one meter from other side (-80 degree).


Mine are 55 cm high

one more. 2 meter from loudspeaker and mic 1 meter up (before it was 55 cm above floor). I am not quite happy with using a 4" fullrange. It's to hard to eq so one day I will ad a tweeter
