The reason that Milan's gothic cathedral is "dumpy" has all to do with weather, the designers knew that they couldn't build an edifice with soaring stained glass windows as the Duomo would be an oven for a good part of the year.

You can go into other FR cathedrals in the middle of August and they are downright chilly!

I see that one of the designers has an affection for "Licorne" -- One year the Cluny Museum had an exhibit of satirical comic strips dealing with the unicorn and princess.
