Hi Telstar

I put information on my web site about digital decoder.

see you later

Eric

Hello Eric,

Very interesting. Clean layout, no pll, separate boards.

I have a feq questions, though. You can answer here or in email.

1) Why the choice of the CS8416 as receiver?
Did you try other receivers? I still have in mind the wolfson WM8804.

2)In your opinion the master clock should be on the dac board (or being pin-mounted on it)? IIRC the shorter the signal between the master clock and the dac, the better.

3)It's nice that you dont have a fixed dac board, so one could design something more complex like i have in mind with several pcm1704.

CS8416 integrate a digital de-emphasis filter. I don't know if Wolfson WM8804 does. If you use external clock, jitter introduced by Cristal of Wolfson chip is canceled. Working with very low jitter chip is not necessary.

Of course signal clock must be as short as possible from DAC. But, digital decoder and DAC is very noisy environment for clock and clock + separate main transformer is very noisy environment for DAC!!! I think to put clock in a separate box, near digital decoder.
Wiring between digital decoder and DAC board is very short, so it is not necessary to put clock directly on DAC board.

Yes, exactly, I make system with two boards because I don't know what kind of analog board to propose. I like simple system with friendly DIY chip, so I use PCM1702 (20bit) in my prototype. Other people want balanced output, with or without level control output, other people prefer PCM56 or PCM1704 chip.... I could not build everything!

Dunno, but I don't care, cause I'll be using a computer as the only source. I can do well without hdcd and emphasis, especially if i can get rid of spdif, which is my latest "development".

Oh, yes, I agree. 🙂
Keep me updated.
