lol!

Sorry for the off-topic but how did those behemoths you showed half-finished at the UK meet turn out?? They were beasts and I'd love to know more.

Simon

Hi again Simon,

I'll make this very quick so as not to take the thread too far off topic. The construction is done but one of the speakers still has spraying work to be finished but aside from that its all functional and pretty well dialled in.

This what they look like finished.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Your only a few minutes down the road so you could drop in and take a listen for yourself. Tea, biscuits and bad music will be FOC 🙂

Instead of clogging the thread I could email you to arrange, if your interested of course.

no, thats not the reason. its one of the reasons. the other reason is that the benefit realized is not proportional to the extra weight.

why dont we see many silver voice coils ? is it because silver is more expensive ? yes silver is more expensive but its not the reason. its one of the reasons. another reason is that for its benefit of better conductance silver has the disadvantage of being heavier than copper.

underhung driver has higher weight and lower power handling than an overhung driver ... its not just about cost

neodymium also costs more yet so many professional speakers use it. professional speakers don't use silver voice coils or underhung motors. why ?

its not all about cost ...

My premise is actually value, for a given level of performance underhung motors cost more to make. The two sentences after the first statement highlight that fact.

You can design an underhung and an overhung to have the same power handling, again for a given power handling underhung cost more.

I don't know why you are sweating motor weight. Neo has found it way into PA applications because roadies like lightweight amp/speaker stacks. For a home setting, typical hifi/audiophile enclosure weighs a lot more. The magnet stack doesn't move and is probably benefical to SQ.

Hey, I have a dusty pair of those small Focals, that I am going to use in 3way old-style monitor with a 12" and XT19, and you are right, those 5K Focals are quite good and easy to work with, such pretty cones are seen every day

About speaker cost,

In theory, Underhung drivers are superior, But in practice, the difference in sound is not readily audible, And some conventional drivers performs better than underhung ones, 2 to 3 times the price.

Look at Zaph's test for example.click here

I actually agree with your statement, but it is unfair to compare a underhung motor with 3.5mm xmax to overhung motors with 6-6.5mm xmax, and say there is no benefit. I am assuming you are refering to zaph's audiotechnology tests.

I think the illuminator motor specs are interesting for its large xmax, xmech and rather high sensitivity, not because of its underhung technology.

Yes indeed, I was refering to Zaph's test.

I'm skeptical about the large xmax of the new SS 7" woofers, Unless SS made both the spider and the surround very soft and compliant, I doubt that it could reach it's rated xmax, without reaching suspension limit first. And if indeed it could, I could imagine that the midrange will loose clarity at that point, beacause of too much excursion while reproducing the delicate midrange frequency at the same time. on a 2way design.

And in practice, There is no free lunch in having very long xmax, The laws of physics still applies . I'm thinking that the new SS drivers would require bigger box, If not that, It will have low efficiency.

For the cost of a Ferrari i could have a Suburu and a whole stable of Ducatis... wish they would bring the supermono back.
