Dear Peterson,
The cost of the LCD is 5500 INR which is roughly 70 pounds.
I directly bought it from a store, not online. The display is not SVGA compliant.Also with a 10 inch screen the projected image will be smaller.

Hi i did not remove the anti glare .
I felt if i leave it on screen door effect will be less. Also i am not ready to take that risk for marginal improvments.

Some Questions

fibbrilator= Dear pal i would like to ask some questions.These are:
1=Why have you used such a thick heat glass?Mind it is is blocking a lot of light may be 10%.
2=Is Your reflector spherical one?If no then again you are not getting the optimum brightness dear.
I did try that screen material but i found pure bright external emulsion better than this as it is not that bright.What has your experience been like?
4=Could you please tell me the pixel size ?In 15" LCD it stands at 0.297 whereas in 17"LCDs it is 0.267.I can see some less contrast in your images.What do you say?

Dear Peterson,

You have mentioned that you got brightness improved significantly by splitting the fresnel.
How did you split the fresnel. I mean what did you do exactly. I would also like to try it if it helps improving brightness. A pic of this can be of great help.

I dont have lexan sheet so I am doing away with 10mm float glass. 10% light block ? No way it will be less than 5% and i dont mind that as i have a 250 w bulb.



no mine is not spherical it is elliptical from a commercial projector. I know spherical will be better.Can you source one for me?



I am in a rented house so no option of painting the wall. This screen material is called flex board(used for hoardings and out door banners) as it is the material is very reflective causing glares if there are wrinkles .i made the surface matt finish by scrubbing the front surface with scrotch brite dish washing pad soaked in water.Now the results are excellent

My LCD is 10 inch.Pixel sizes are relative to panel size and the effective no of pixels in the display.Please refer to the respective data sheet for more details.

My be the images i have taken is not so great shall try again with different settings in my camera.Also my lcd is not a high resolution one.But seeing is believing. Atri sarkar had visited my place.You can ask him how it looked.

Splitting the Fresnel

I had get the fresnel separated with the help of people cutting metal, glass, plywood for swith boards. i.e switb board cutters. They have a motorised mini saw. With that they cut at the edges , i.e, left and right extremes. I'd already cut the top and bottom 1" portion out using handsaw. So the fresnel came separated.

Since I had already spoiled one 15" LCD monitor in my DIY endeavor, I'm not prepared to spoil another monitor. But after seeing the projection from the LCD, my urge to have a projector increased more. So finally I bought a DLP projector ViewSonic PJ503d which is SVGA native, interpolated XGA with D-Sub vga input, component input, S-Video input, 1500 lumens brightness, 2000:1 contrast ratio. The projection is very bright, even with 2 tube lights in the room. It costs about Rs25000.

Really, DLP is many ways better than LCD projection. Now thinking of doing my own screen, lol. I don't have camera, so no photos.

My Fresnels and Lamps are available

Following my previous reply, Since I bought new DLP projector, I am having 150W MH lamp with copper ballast of make Lewin(China Make) and the split fresnel lens, 74mm projection triplet lens from Lensel India.

Fresnels cannot be used with 15" LCD since I'd cut the edges for splitting, but can be used with LCD below 11" safely.

I had purchased the them as below
Fresnel Rs 800
74 mm Proj lens Rs960
150 W MH lamp with Ballast Rs 1500
So total 3200

I want to dispose them off as I don't need them anymore.

If any one is interested, plz let me know with the price quote.

Coparison between a DLP and our DIY

Friend why have you bought a DLP one.Were you not satisfied with the performance?
What respect do you find the DLP better than your DIY?
Which DLP have you bought and the price?
Please post some comparison shots if can manage to ?

Updated LCD!

Hello to all!!! Well guy's to start off i would like to say congrat's to all whom have finished there master piece's.This is truly a fantastic hobby my life for the past 2 yrs has drastically changed due to the DIY projector.I have tried and finally succeeded in my PJ!!.Completed some time ago and enjoying on a daily basis as soul T.V,I thought that i would take an expensive step to upgrade the LCD so this was just completed today after several day's in the conversion over the LCD is an RCA native 1024x768 7" absolutely no screen door at the projected image of 105 diagnol.Extremely happy with the image. Good Luck to ALL ! :headbash:

Umeshlumar09 try to find some uv filtering film it's used alot and very easy to find then apply to standard sheet of glass and viola!!COMPLETE!

Dear Umesh ,

The U.V radiation story is an old wife's tale:blackcat: . First of all the light is not projected on a person and secondly the U.V that comes out of the lens will be very less to cause any problem if the light falls on some one.

Any way if you get hold of lexan inform me I will be interested in it.

By the way can you tell more about your setup? ( light source , bulb type, lcd, lens etc?)

Lumenlab lens kit
OSRAM HQI -T 250w W/D with OSRAM kit.
Ladle as a reflector .I got it ground by an ironsmith.
BENQ FP51G 15" monitor.
LEXAN = i am looking for.


Fib....=I found some sort of a screendor on your pics.Is it there in person?Does your LCD have a VGA input terminal?

Dear Umesh.

There is a little bit of screen door.It will be visible when your are less than a meter away from the screen. But from normal viewing distance it is totally invisible.

.:smash: Also one thing I would like to point out when displaying any of the primary colors alone (red /green/blue) a screen door like effect will be visible in all single panel LCD projectors.It is because if for eg.when diplaying RED both green and blue lines will be off and dark.Causing a screen door like effect. That's why commercial projectors use 3 lcds for each color and finally combine the 3 outputs optically.

Yes my display has a VGA i/p . Supported resolution is 800 x 480.
Native resolution is less than 640 x 480(may be 320x240) could not get any documentation for my display till date 🙁

If no luck with lexan buy thick glass and coat one side with transparent plastic. Thats what I did 😀 .

Fib = you are right.I wanted a PJ for showing powerpoint presentations and movies of course.So i searched and asked a ghell lot of people and they all were at one on this that if you want an excellent quality always go for over 15" lcds as the size of the pixels is smaller.Though the size does get out of proportions but quality rules man.So i decided to go for that.As for lexan it was available @120 a sq foot but not a small piece.So i will got my friend to search for me in paharganj there are too many acrylics dealer.

:att'n: A WARNING FOR ALL
Some lcd's do not have an anti glare film to remove. The Anti Glare surface is kind of a MATT finish liquid which is sprayed on to the Polariser film.

:dead: I am afraid it may not be possible to restore your LCD back to the original form it will not stick back again properly.Try cello taping the edges. If you use any glue between the film and the LCD it will be visible in the projected image also. :bawling:

Polariser film itself is availablefrom certain sources you may buy that and stick it on your LCD also.But could be a costly affair.



polarizer film available here

In my humble opinion it is not worth removing the Anti glare considering the risk involved and the gains are only marginal. I also feel if the Anti glare is present screen door effect is less visible.

I have a similar LCD, though I have not removed the AG yet, but I am tempted to do so, since I tried pulling the AG layer, and I know it is very dirty. So I must gain on quality if I can get rid of it, with new polarizers.

In few days I will try doing this, and may be I can seek your help if you know how to change polarizers and can extend some help 🙂
