Car audio drivers can’t even deal with this…. So weird is this tight spider, bizarre huge xmax etc.

Nice woofer but probably outside my budget and definitely no WAF with that one.
I've been told I can go to a 15' on each side and no larger for the stereo

It's a dogs breakfast of a box.
I should have waited and simply bought some new sheets of chipboard instead of trying to use up all the scraps and off-cuts.
I have two 12" drivers here and I may as well use the one I got at the garage sale for the top as it's a high Q driver and I'll just mount it in a baffle; no box.
At the moment I'm thinking a book crossover at 300Hz should give me a starting point for a passive XO because at that point both drivers seem to have a similar impedances around their DCRs and close enough should be good enough for a party speaker that is there just to make noise.

I hate hearing where the subwoofers ‘are’..It's a dogs breakfast of a box.

65/80 hz to ‘Mains’ or they start to ‘exist’ and the room issues are bad enough.. but???…. I dunno…. too many things to have to deal with and WAF is just a brick wall to anything anyone would find sounded great anyhow so solve that first 😆
this conundrums too compromised over and over so people will argue sealed boxes to just remove the problem that shouldn’t exist and all kinds of quirky things to avoid the truth(whatever it would be if freedom to explore existed without limitations ..
just build it to look like furniture or a shelf or under furniture and discover things that wonderful sounding that otherwise won’t ever be experienced.
make a shoe closet at the same time and earn some room to do your thing 😆

They know 3” as 6 +…. We enforce this math already 😆So what’s an 18” over a 15” (she’ll never know)Nice woofer but probably outside my budget and definitely no WAF with that one.

For a party box played outside I don't think it matters.
But as for "Not knowing" SWMBO has a degree in design and she "WILL" know 😱
When funds allow I will change the current CerwinVega Vega124s in the loungeroom for a pair of good 15" but in the meantime I just want to get this party box finished and see what it sounds like.
I am going though my stash and I have one 10mH cored coil which may be able to be used on the 12" but I may have to try winding something to use on the sub.
Doing passive is a bit of a PITA really

then she will know fibernacci/golden ratio and this: And 💚 it! Make it fun and make it incredibly interestingBut as for "Not knowing" SWMBO has a degree in design and she "WILL" know 😱

Odd harmonics, in higher order modes, reveal a perfect alignment to a set of numbers and thus frequencies (and subsequently pressure and velocity nodes ) in an endless cycle that represents the entire fabric of the universe(or at least the solar system, and up to the Kuiper belt, and all of nature, including DNA, the carbon atom etc.). Once you put those into perfect rectangles that create it as sound bandwith and outta bandwidth ‘coded’ info as qwresonators.then she will know fibernacci/golden ratio and this: And 💚 it! it doesn’t just have to be a subwoofer. It can be a tool to understanding so much more, and the details of horn response expose this very very well.

this driver works as well(15 or 18) $100 less

Without a doubt these have to be the worst speaker I have ever built.
Serves me right for buying S/H from a Pro audio feller.
I think "Used until close to dead" might describe them best.
Box is no where near dead enuf and vibrates badly and the driver is not really much good.
Seems to have improved a bit as it warmed up but that may just be me getting used to it.
It is loud but not at all clean and even with the sub25Hz filter on too much subsonic is making the driver do awful things.
Still it was a learning process, I've never worked with a woofer this big before.
I'm wondering if gluing some extra MDF scraps to the chipboard would help much?
The woofer cost me $100- and fuel to collect so all up I've only spent for glue and screws an extra $30-

SWMBO has commented that it's a DOOF-DOOF speaker and she's right.
It performs as modeled with that peak in response, one note bass.
But modeled in a really big box tuned low it looks much better so I might just buy some new sheets of chipboard and make a refrigerator sized box and see what happens.
I won't waste the box tho.
I might just cut a lot of holes in it and put a driver in each face and see what happens, an excuse to get rid of all the singletons and orphans.
Might take me a few weeks tho so please don't hold your breath

Hi Moondog55
Just a side note ... sorry for jumping in, but I couldn't help notice the cone being discolored by sun and age.
I had a 12" which had become almost as light colored as yours, and I just used a regular black spray paint to make it look almost new again.
Don't think it will affect the T/S parameters much.
I unfortunately do not have a "before" picture 😉

I might paint it black at some time in the future.
Just at the moment I'm trying to persuade my beloved that I do have room in the shed for another fridge sized box.

Modeling has persuaded me to go with the much larger box.
I've just started making up a cheap 600 litre box which will be tuned to approximately 25 Hz.
I say approximately as I'm not experienced enough with porting and especially shelf ports to know in advance what the results will be

I've made a start on the 600litre box. Will be approximately 550 after all the deductions for vent and woofer
I need to buy more clamps, I can only glue one face at a time. Also I need to go and buy even more battens and I'll need some wheels so I will be able to move it around

Quick question for people more expert than I am.
Best driver position for this woofer.
Top?
Bottom?
Slightly offset from Centre and if so up or down?
Box is 600 wide by 588 deep and 1800 tall

Mate came over to borrow a cup of lawnmower for an hour or two. Got to discussing this box build [ he is a qualified carpenter and cabinet maker] and I called it a "Monkey Coffin" at which he laughed and told me I could bury a gorilla in this box so I think I've just named it that.
