Seems to be a good place, thanks. 🙂 I went through their online catalog, and all the items seem to be in the sensible price range. No $5,000 speaker cables or anything of that sort.Hawthorne stereo in Seattle is still open! They post all their used gear here:

It's a fun place to look and they are nice people.

I try to visit Hawthorne whenever I'm in Seattle. It's a trip down stereo memory lane. In looking at this inventory list I see a lot of pretty good items for not too much, especially speakers like the Vienna Acoustics.
Hi Richard,
I just restored a 2265 for a customer who also wanted the LED kit, about $710 CDN. He needed some extra stuff and I also did a couple of slight modifications that boosted performance. You really want a seasoned audio technician to prepare the receiver. So the only two things that matter when buying the receiver of choice would be:
1. untouched, no "reacap" and works (works isn't that important, just not hacked)
2.cosmetically in good to very good condition. You can't easily fix this if its a problem
So presenting a receiver in good cosmetic condition to a good audio technician will be your best path to ending up with a great receiver with minimal risk. If a good technician has one for sale, you might be even further ahead.

I agree to a point. Only buy working and untouched gear from Fleabay, have a good audio technician restore the receiver properly. It's more than a "recap" job, a lot more.Marantz 2285B off Ebay

She has not started her auditioning exercises yet. She is hoping to start now, during the Thanksgiving week. 🙂
The non-technical parts are always the hardest for the first-timer I guess.
The non-technical parts are always the hardest for the first-timer I guess.
This Thanksgiving, I feel thankful. 😀 My friend has started her exploration. She's done her first visit to a dealer. She's heard big floorstanders by B&W: the 603 and the CM10. She likes the CM10 more. She also notes that the CM10 costs four times as much as the 603. And she's wondering why she should bother with standmounts. I've told her that the same number of dollars spent on a standmount will give her "better sound, other than deep bass" than a floorstander. She's wondering whether this is any point, if deeper bass is to be sacrificed. I've pushed her into agreeing that she'll check out standmounts, specially really "high-end" ones like the B&W 800 series, just to get a wider exposure. Finally, she'll decide whatever she wants.
She visited one branch of Magenta AV, and took her sampler CD along with her. This gesture was much appreciated by the man at the dealership, and this appreciation boosted her confidence. 🙂
So, much thanks to you all, the process has started. Miles to go. I'll keep you posted.

Sounds like a lady who gets what she wants 🙂 if she goes the cm 10 route and there any available in Portland try them with a Hegel H 80 , it goes against my previous ramblings on budget but an audition worth hunting down if possible.
The Hegel H80 definitely sounds interesting. I didn't even know of this brand's existence. Add a media player (a cheap Pioneer N50? Bluesound Note? Cambridge Audio DACMagic? Raspberry Pi3 with Hifiberry Digi+? 😀) with USB disk playback and digital audio output and own is all set to listen.
And yes, my friend has a sharp mind of her own, and makes up her own mind. 😀

If I were to put a commercial system together, I'd look no further than this:
KEF LS50 Wireless - United States
It has everything. Less shopping, more listening. You cannot beat it for quality, performance, and easy of use.

I have listened to the cm6 (2 way) vs the cm10 pretty extensively. The cm6 sounds great until you hear the cm10. Then you realize what you are missing. But the cm6 is surprisingly full range, both speakers use the same tweeters.
Once you figure in the cost of good stands it sometimes seems like towers are a better value...
I ended up with KEF r700. No complaints here.
The Hegel is Norwegian they have gained a cult following especially with B&W owners , the H80 has a built in Dac btw definitely worth seeking out .

they may well sound quite wonderful, but "wireless" ? - I always snicker when I hear that
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
Actually, reading the details of the LS50 Wireless, it appears to be an interesting system. Some care seems to have been taken to get good sound. And 10Mbits/sec over WiFi may be a bit dodgy in some environments, but the speakers support RJ45 for wired Ethernet too, and 10Mbits/sec over that should be absolutely smooth. (That's the raw bit rate you'd need for 192/24.)
Not having heard the LS50 in either version, I'll trust the company's reputation for "doing the math", and it certainly appears there's a lot of tech packed into that very small package - I just can't help giggle at the term "wireless".
Absolutely nothing happened. 🙁
All that excitement, a fee auditions, and then nothing. I've given up. If anything actually happens, if my friend actually buys something and tells me, I'll post full details here. I promise. I owe all of you.

I still haven't lost hope entirely. I know that my conversations with my friend sometimes have included mentions of the "CM10" and certain KEF floorstanders, in the last 3-4 weeks.
Let's see.
Let's see.
Ahh thats a shame maybe she's finding it diffcult to choose , always an issue for me one speaker has great bass but a recessed mid the next has a superb mid but a flabby overblown bass etc etc making the decision to part with ( in your friends case ) a considerable amount of cash difficult.
For some it's easy though , i asked my sister what made her buy the ( horrendous sounding ) all in one mini system she recently purchased and her reply " it looks cute and i like the contrasting colours " . ( Shiny red gloss plastic and white speaker cones ) for some choices are simple 🙂
