Duratex arrived today but I forgot to order the rollers. Anyone use something available at the local hardware store? I've got lowes, Home Depot, ace, and even a woodcraft store to choose from. I'll have a look tomorrow but i don't recall seeing anything like the open cell foam roller duratex sells.
I have used the loop texture rollers from the big box stores with good success.
Linzer Better 9 in. x 3/8 in. Loop Texture Roller Cover-RC119 - The Home Depot
I put the first coat or two down with a regular fine roller to get good coverage and then use the loop roller. The texture is more aggressive than the foam curated roller but it looks great. I'll see if I can find some pics.

Here are some pictures using the loop texture roller from home depot. It is more aggressive than the foam duratex pad but I like it for pa stuff since it hides touched up nicks and scratches butter than the smoother finish.

One PPSL with a pair of the Kappa Pro 15LF will need about 1.2KW on peaks (per driver) to hit 130dB around 50hz, this would be about what a Crest CA12 will do on program material (most of the older Crest amps have about 3dB of dynamic headroom at 4Ω).
djk, I asked earlier, but I'm not sure if you picked it up - how much cone excursion do your sims show at 1.2kW per driver at 50Hz? - Hornresp suggests the drivers will be seriously nonlinear.
Chris
Probably, but in practice people don't run sine waves, even in dance music that sounds like a sine sweep there are plenty of harmonics.
If you intend to cross lower than 100hz and use huge power you may get into problems, I never have.

That's the only one I could find locally. I forgot to grab a regular roller so went ahead and just used the texture roller. Seems to have covered well but I think doing the first coat with a normal roller would work better.
How are you guys doing the plenum and port? I think I might just use flat black from a rattle can. Won't be able to see much with the grille on anyway.

I use duplicolor truck bed liner in a spray can for stuff I can't reach with a roller. Available at auto part stores.

Good idea and I have some from another project.
I found some 3" foam craft brushes and used those to do the plenum.
Overall very happy with the finish, only a few spots where I can see wood after the first coat. Other than those I'm not even sure it needs a second coat, the HD texture roller put it on thick.
These are basically done now, just need to mount drivers in the second box, and decide how to mount my grills to the ports. Best looking boxes I've built to date. As far as sound I've only tested in my house, and made no attempt to eq them, just crossover in DSP, And I think they sound quite nice. I can see myself building another pair in the spring, getting too cold for garage work now. I'll post some pics up soon so you can see the finished product.
Some observations:
I didn't account for the plywood not actually being 3/4", so I think the plenum is ever so slightly trapezoidal.
don't get PL Pro adhesive on your skin.
I suck at BONDO, hopefully it was worth the effort instead of spackle....I just cant imagine spackle holding up that well.
I like the texture made with the Home Depot roller and Duratex, but I think it must use a lot more duratex as I pretty much used the whole gallon on two cabs, with one heavy coat to cover bare wood and a second light coat to get any voids.

Suggestion for a small sound company just starting out.
Dual 12 reflex with a large format compression driver. May be used in small venues by itself (biamped).
Add a pair of PPSL for bigger jobs, take in one or two as needed (now you are triamping).
Add another pair of PPSL if doing dance music, or if you plan on expanding bigger.
Build dual 12 straight horns for mids, and another set of large format compression drivers.
Build another set of PPSL and you're done.
Is there a thread with plans for these boxes? specifically the dual 12" w/ compression driver.
Thanks.
Post 41 shows the dual 12 and compression driver in a stylish grey rat fur, that's the one I'm interested in building next perhaps.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
I'll have to look for that one, give me a couple of days.
(it's not rat fur, it's nutria fur!)

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
No Prob.
Here are the pics I promised. that box needs to have the plywood backers behind the handles painted black and I need to affix the grills.
Will a couplw L b rackets in the port to attach the grill Affect the tuning any?
Handles and Feet I already had so I used them, Grilles made from saqlvaged material. I went with I put some ALEX caulk in behind them so no air could leak.
Each handle has four 10-32 machine screws through both sheets of ply( the box and the backer) into T-nuts,and the remainder of its holes are just 3/4" wood screws. Feet are also attached with T-nuts and 1/4-20 machine screws.
Best looking build Ive done to date and still loving the sound, though I haven't run both together yet....
