Did you abandon the DS1868 idea? I was starting to work on that solution as a way to come up to speed on PIC's.
Craig
No I have not abandoned it, I just was fascinated by the simplicity of this, and I feel like using the better resistors in this case might buy me something.
Cheers!

Russ,
I don't have the skills or experience to help with this, but I would be VERY interested in building a design like this. I also don't want to be stuck in se mode.

Because I use a header on the attenuator PCB for control interface, really the controller options are pretty much limitless. One could easiliy implement a display or infrared remote, but for now, since I like turning knobs, I am happy with a very simple controller. 🙂
Forgot to mention, that you would use one attenuator PCB for SE stereo, and two for balanced stereo operation. The PCBs could be stacked, and use the same controller.
Cheers!

Oh i think this will be a kit he will offer.. I just talked on the phone and told him i have some stuff to help out with this 🙂
it´s very cool.
Is this the best kind of attenuator?
I would use something like this at the preamp output.
would it work fine?

Russ, you are spoil'in us😉 I would definately be interested🙂
The X-CC-CCS-BosoZ is pretty silent. Normally you place the volume control at the output (when speaking of the BosoZ) because any circuit noise is attenuated when turning down the volume. I didnt try to wire it in front of the circuit though. Maybe its doable? Did anyone else try that approach?

A remote would be nice indeed, the display also😉 The only thing missing then is a remote controlled input selector, with built-in function for shorting the -IN to GND when selecting one of the SE inputs😉any word on a remote or a display.

Wow i had a whole thread on this. The location of the pot.. In front of the pre or after the pre.. Humm.
i think it should be tested.. Right now im running this..
cd player > dac > buffer > Volume pot > mini a's ( using the dac )
If gone this way..
cd player ( rca out's ) > Volume pot > mini a's this works too.
IRFF130
Any comments on using IRFF130 -100V -8A input capacitance 650 pf for BOSOZ ?? Have 20 of them made by harris. Noticed Nelson used devices with over a 1000pf without detriment . These are in a TO-5 type package.

Brian,
One more minor change to your excel spreadsheet BOM I just discovered the hard way. On the power supply the 220 uf need to be EEU-FCA221L in order for them to fit the board. One more delay waiting for Digi-Key.

Eek, sorry about that. Fixing now....
So as for the output caps. It appears I have enough of the Jantzens for all current kit orders (that is, orders that have been paid for). I will ship all pending kits out on Monday with the Jantzens. If I somehow missed a kit in my count (not actually home right now), I will fill those orders with Solen 20uF caps from PE.
Now, the problem is that more Jantzens will be 30-60 days out, and I can't get many Solens from PE (they can get me 40, but after that it's a few here and there). Not very impressed with their wholesale side of things, I must say. They can supply as many Dayton caps as I can order, and Russ says they are very good.
I can't immeadiately find another good supplier of Jantzen or Solen in the same price range (easy to find Solens for a lot more money). So, I am thinking of using the Daytons in future kits. I found Steeno's Rifas at Elna, but when you add shipping and 25% VAT, they are not such a great deal anymore. Unless I bump up the cost of the kits, which I hesitate to do...
Thoughts?

Okay, so I just found a spectacular source for the Solen 20uF caps. They have almost 1500 in stock, so no worries. Switching to those for future kits. PE is out.

I am actually reworking the attenuator for logarithmic taper at 2 db per step from 0db to -64db. 🙂
More to come soon.

Working on a very simple attenuator for my XBOSOZ 🙂
topic deserves it's own thread. 🙂

I am looking forward to see Russ's work on the attenuator🙂 Sure enough he will come up with some great stuff😀
I agree with moe29 that it deserves its own thread, but please point to it from this thread!
