My Take on X-BOSOZ

You are most wellcome, Marc🙂 Happy to help out when I can🙂
Depending on your mains stability, I wouldnt like to use a zenerstring over 65 volts. You need a little safety margin to make sure the regulator has a bit "over"voltage to regulate from. I would use 7 pcs of 9,1V zeners myself for added stability. the mosfet regs throws off a couple of volts also, so that nets you around 60v. Whatever combination suits you, just remember that the zeners should have approx. the same value (you cant use a 5v together with a 60v) The worst case you can have is a "starving" zenerstring. Its not pretty to listen to at all:xeye: I guess you could use a 70v zener, but then you would have to trust that your mains dont "dip" too much🙂 Whatever, I am running my Twisted from 60V on the pos rail with good results indeed (actually using a 55v trafo also) I have nothing to complain about😉

Hi Guys,

Look, I don't want to reinvent the wheel. The whole reaslon for buying a kit was to make sure everything worked as designed. Before I bought this transformer I asked if it would work and was told yes. Can someone recommend and trafo or two that would work properly with this kit as-is. I know most of you prefer to tweak things but I just get into trouble when I do that.

Blessings, Terry

Hi Terry🙂 Dont fear at all😉 You can safely put a smaller zener value into the psu board! Dont worry about it, at all😉 It will work allright, but maybe not with the zener included in the kit. Sorry. I see your point though🙂 I suggest you use the trafo you have allready. There is no need to buy something else🙂 I am sure you can safely make this little tweak, without problems🙂 If you are pretty reckless, as I am, just throw in the kit contents. If something sounds bad now and then(when the mains drops!) you know where to look😉

It is kitted to work with the same voltage trafos metalman used in hs circuit.

You can get the same trafos I am using from Avel Lindberg. Here are the part numbers:

Y236207
Y236102

There is no way we could send zeners for all possible trafos. 🙂 So we chose the ones which matched Terry Aben's original PS design.

Cheers!

I don't mind replacing the zeners in the kit with different values. I don't want to have to put together some big string of zeners that won't just pop right into the boards. If someone can tell me which zeners to replace and what value to use I would be very thankful.

Hi Terry,

You could use 4 x 15V on the pos rail and 1 x 15V on the neg rail. If you don't mind waiting a week or so I can send them to you...

Hi Brian,

I'm at work right now so I can't see the boards. Are there locations for 4 zeners on the pos rail or do they have to be stacked? I may very well have som 15V zeners, I will have to check when I get home. If not I'm sure I can get some easily.

Thanks, Terry

You could use 4 x 15V
Sorry Brian, but that would be a bit on the "lowish" side. I would suggest 3x15v and 2x9,1v zeners for the positive side. You would need at least 63v on the zenerstring to get the desired 60 volts. Remember that the fet regulator throws off a couple of volts. With the zener combo I suggest, you would end up pretty nicely🙂

Steen🙂

Edit. We posted at the same time😉 I didnt remember the 4 positions for zeners. Nonetheless you would need at least 63 volts in the zener string🙂 Make a combo that suits the requirements😉

Hi Guys,

OK this is what zeners I have on hand. (several of each)

27v, 20v, 12v, 9.1v plus what ever was sent in the kit.

Can I get to where I need to be with any combinations of these or do I still need to get something else.

If none of these will work I would like to take Brian up on his kind offer to send what I need.

Blessings, Terry

Since I'm sure you're not the only one with that Trafo (I have one, but not for this project), here's what I'm gonna do.

I need to reorder FETs anyway, so I will add some zeners to the order, and provide them to kit buyer who have the PE trafo and want them. For the + Rail, 2 x 33V and for the - rail, 1 x 15V. That should be prefect.

I'm making the order today, and it shoudl be here around Wed or Thurs, so I can get them out on Friday. US delivery shoudl be a couple days.

[EDIT: Ordered]

Just like the waitress says:

Ordering!

I'm getting my stuff together for a PE order and will order zeners at that time. Their stock jumps from 1w to 5w zeners. Is 1 watt enough (BOM lists 1.6 watt) or will 5 watt fit the through holes (lead diameter is 0.037"-0.043")?
