My Onkyo CD Player not working

Hi all,

Just join this forum.

My old Onkyo CD-Player, RC-625C, is not working recently. After placing CD on the tray and closing the tray, no indication showing on the LED display. After pressing the "start key" on the remote control a while, no CD Disc showing on LED display.

I have opened the CD-Player case and cleaned the LASER light with alcohol. Problem still remains. The LASER light holder can move on opening and closing the tray. But there is no light showing. Can I see the LASER light with eye?

Please help.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

If it is showing No disc after pressing the Play button (on remote control) it should do the same after closing the tray in case no disc is found.
"should" is the keyword since I have not owned any Onkyo players and do not know how the startup sequence actually happens.
So the tray closing limit switch may be worth to check out.

Electrically the laser pickup unit seems to be directly connected to the signal processor/amplifier chip so unless the cable and connector have lost contact somehow then the only option seems to be the laser pickup replacement.

Hi madis64,

Thanks for your advice and link. I'll go through the link later.

It seems quite strange to me. When the first time I opened the CD Player set. I performed following steps:-
1. Disconnect the cable of the CD Player device (inside the CD Player set)
2. Remove the abovementioned device and then its cover. I see the motor, laser light, moving mechanic parts etc. inside.
3. After reconnecting the cable and pressing the button, on the CD Player set controlling the tray, the tray can be ejected and returned.
4. After its return, I press the "Play" key on the remote control. The laser light merges up and then down after a while. The motor is not turning.
5. I place a CD disc on the motor and turn it manually. Then the motor starts to rotate.
6. CD can be played.
7. After playing the complete CD, I place another CD. Pressing the "Play" bottom on the remote set, it won't play CD the second time, even with hand rotating it. It seems the motor unable to rotate.
8. This time on ejecting and closing the tray, the laser light won't move, merging up and down.
9. I clean the laser light and its set with alcohol. It is no use

I don't see I can replace the laser light set because this is a very old model. If unable to fix the problem I can only purchase a new CD Player.

Hi madis64,

After closing the tray, I press the Play button of the remote control. It shows "No Disc" on the LED display after a while. The Laser light is not moving up and also the motor is not rotating.

It is very strange to me. It worked only once. After closing the tray, I turned the motor with hand first and then the motor continued to rotate. This time this trick doesn't work

While (still) troubleshooting my wonky CD player, I realized that taking it apart will cause some loose joints especially at the pin connectors. In my case I strongly suspect the control panel to mainboard connection has come loose. Pressing on the pins at a certain angle will enable successful TOC look-up 75% of the time. Without pressing on the pins, TOC only loads up 10 -15% of the time.

So yeah, reflow all suspect connections.

Hi all,

Lot of thanks for your advice.

I have disassembled the player device. Pls refer to attached screenshots.

But I have no idea
1. How to test tthe motor
2. How to test the laser-light?

Any advice? Thanks

Regards

Gently disconnect that plug with the white wires that go to the PCB with the motors soldered to it. You MUST do this first to electrically isolate the main board.

Hold a 9v battery for a couple of seconds across the spindle motor connections on that large PCB. Do the same again with the battery reversed to run the motor in both directions. 2 or 3 seconds each way is enough to spin and burn any debris off the commutator. Do not do this for any longer.

Also DO NOT do this to the sled motor... you will strip/damage the gears.

You can not test the laser without more specialised equipment. If it glows dull red (and its a tiny spot not very obvious) for those couple of seconds the lens moves up and down then that is really all you can easily do. You did say earlier the disc played so the laser must be at least basically functional.

Do not stare or look at the lens when the laser is on, look at it from 30+cm away and look at it from a slight angle, not directly over it.

but that takes us into the realm of much more advanced investigation needing a decent scope.
Theoretically yes but practically this player is missing a separate signal amplifier to examine (and measure) the eye pattern on its output.
So if the spindle motor turns out to be functional (with direct applied voltage) then the only path for progressing I would see a replacement laser pickup.
Trial and error would also that be...
