My first Dipole Subwoofer!!!

hum... i have 2 6 1/2" radioshack drivers sitting down in my basement right now. maybe ill put them into a baffle and see how that works out. ive always been looking to replace my sub (no real problem with it, i just want more), and the commercial offerings are disappointing. the next sub im looking at costs $4K! thankfully im a dealer, so it will be much less (around $200 😀 ). im wondering if i could do like 8 15's? just do 4 boxes like chops did and stack them 🙂

i too have maggies (1.6QR's), and i love them. i just need to fill in the bottom end.

if i was going to build a test sub with my two 6 1/2's, how do i calculate the size of the baffle, etc? was there a spreadsheet somewhere?

It's very simple: there's a -6dB shelf that starts at the frequency whose 1/2 wavelength is the *shortest* distance from the front of the speaker cone to the back.

Unless I didn't think that through right. Maybe it's 1/4 wavelength. But I think it's 1/2. Anyway. Someone will correct me, I'm sure.

I have also been puzzled by the three options, ie H baffles, W baffles and plain baffles for mounting woofers.

I can see that the W baffle is probably most efficient and should allow for smaller woofers but am I right in saying that the type of baffle should depend on the frequency range of the woofer?

In other words, something used as a true subwoofer could go in the W baffles but something used up to say 100Hz should be used on a plain baffle in the same plain as the midrange driver.

Looks like those PYLE woofers were too good. I've just checked the links given in this thread and can find no trace of them.

Am I correct in thinking that they are originally intended for car audio? And what is the Qts, Fs and Xmax figures for them?

I'm trying to locate something similar in the UK or Europe.

Thanks Cowanrg.

I have been looking for soething along the lines of a 15 inch woofer, with a Qts very close to (or higher than) 0.5, Fs - >30Hz, and an Xmax - >4mm. Is this close to the Pyle specs?

The only potential match so far (in the UK) is the Eminence Delta 15LF , Qts - 0.58, Fs - 41Hz and Xmax - 4.8mm. The best price on that is 53UKP (90USD).

Now, considering that we are being asked to shell out an extra five million UKP to pay for security arrangements for the visit of George W, I don't suppose he could load Airforce 1 with a stack of those Pyle woofers and drop them off at my place! 😉

(Or if enough of you (in the USA) donate 15 inch woofers to the UK, we will keep him over here indefinitely) :xeye:

Well, I am fairly confident that I have searched all the UK sources of woofers and the only one that I can find (that has specs) that is sort of suitable is the Eminence Beta 15.

Here are the T/S parameters

Any comments from the 'experts' as to how suitable these are for di-pole (OB) use?

Available for just under 40UKP 'over here'.

Looking for similar driver for my OB bass project (only one driver per side to help my Fostex FE-204 full range drivers) I found that Monacor SP-385G might be suitable. Both drivers (Monacor and Eminence Beta 15) show quite the same responce in Thorsten's OB calc. But they are some -2db in 40-100Hz region. So I'm not sure they will fit right (also not sure how close to reality are this kind of simulations).

Well, I bought one and put it in a sealed box. I think you could get more bass from a good 5" driver, lol. Also, the bass was very sloppy sounding, but I do understand that dipole- configuration might completely change the character, from what I've read here... I gave it away now, to 'Matttcattt', he was going to use 2. Wonder if he's built anything yet... Why not spend a few squid more and get something better built with bigger magnets..?
