Bulb heat....
"Hey Altec, nice results!! Don't worry about the pics, they are good enough to see you've built a good projector!
I was looking at your bulb specs.. 15.000LM with 250W, good but your main problem (If I have understood) is heat! So why don't you move to 50W 16.000 LM? If you want I can send you the link! Off course, one problem is thebeam is 8° only..but adding more fresnels infront of the panel would help this out..
Anyway, you're a great DIYer! If you can, put some pics of your setup!"
Thanks for the nice comments.

Na. 90F is about 31C. Which is barely warm. Not close to hot. My 175watt Metal Halide I have here has more heat in its light beam then this 250watt halo. The cold mirror and dichrotics do miracles. My EXT bulb wasnt nearly as bright as this ENH is now. I have about 6 of those ext's in bulk pack. Very good little bulbs. Find another use for them-prolly me fish ponds. Use'em for tracklighting.
Tried useing two at once-but I would need some sort of glare filter thats better then my purple coated lenses. It was way overcast!
"TETUTIGRE: I'm using it with a standard ac/ac 12v adapter, with 65W max output! Pretty good.."
If you have a pc power supply it works too. My EXT's are 12vac but a filiment doesnt care. If you give it dc 12v its better actually as there isnt the latency between polarity changes. DC is constant and makes it actually a smidge brighter.
🙂

ahh ace i thought u could do maths well mine is rughtly 7cm by 9cm or the other way round for 4:3 but that is just the glass part with the outer casing its about 12cm by 10cm

yes, same dimensions for mine.. with outer casing 11,5x10..
Ah, Ace, I'm using 3 cheap page magnifiers for fresnels..Does it influence the final result so much?

disa81-
A page magnifier IS a Fresnel lense. It was named after the french scientist who invented it for lighthouses to replace the $$$ heavy glass lenses used at time. Any lense that uses a taperd ring method to magnify is named after him. Cause that was the whole concept. There are however optical grade fresnels which transmitt more light then your avg ones and also refract less light. Some even have glare tinting. Most noticible between cheap and highend. Beyond light transmision is the ghosting. When a cheapo one is used it can more easily cause refraction which is seen as ghosting. THe objective lense see's both the real lcd image and the one in the last fresnel between it and panel. Like in this quick paint image I did. THe red is reflected light. THe yellow transmited. The aqua is the refracted light. IT leaves lense at a angle. This is picked up the objective lense and the primary reason pj's use good fresnels between objective and panel. Often none before lcd cause the reflector and or bulb is customised. Only on O.H.P. lcd's as they are trying to narrow the full stage lighting down to just the smaller panel. We arent conserned with that as much as a more direct even lighting. Thier concern was convienence for the novice.

thanks Altec.. I will move to better fresnels so..
Here's the link for the 50w 16000lm dicroic, unfortunately is an italian site..
www.casadellelampadine.it
Go on "catalogo", then click on "3-alogene per illuminazione generale", then "90-dicroica diam. 50"

LOL its always better to have one on hand and get the right dementions rather then to guess with some calculation lol, thought id ask you guys who know best! 😀

Yeah bigtime buddy, those page maggs arent optical grade half of the time, prety much what altec said, you see a big diff in brightness and sharpness too. Ive seen both compared and was suprised at how much better a ohp frensel was, ive also seen the difference in ohp frensel quality too since im using the highest grade ones us diyers can aford. A good quality frensel on one of those small lcds should be very bright and sharp, a cdm-t bulb is all you would need to get a vary bright image.

Sorry for your panel..
Sorry for your panel..

Hi y'all,
Thanks for the replies. So I'm a newbie, and I might ask some dumb questions, but thanks for directing me to the right direction.
I've got another questiong... could I use that 12v 50W bulb in the OHP? Before anything, let me go back and lay some background here. I have an Apollo 2210 OHP at schol (yeah, I'm a teacher), - I got a Magnabyte M1x, a VGA box and some blackout cloth -I like using the computer to project my notes and classes onto the board rather than jotting them down... my first panel was a B/W infocus which worked well... Anywho.... one night I set it all up, got the movie Driven and was blown out to see that I could magnify the image to cover almost 2 dry-erase boards (the movie is widescreen so it fit perfectly) I could almost feel the cars running me over LOL
This was my first big screen experience BTW. But if only my students could see it.....
Since classes are held during the morning, there is light all over the room.... I can shut the blinds and turn the lights off, and you can see my class notes in Word, some bright color movies (I watched Dora the Explorer with my daughter one afternoon).... but nothing too dark or it can't be seen. The OHP puts out 3000 lumens with a ENX 360W 82v, and 4000 with a FXL 410W 82v.
So I see that.... then I see the posts about a 12v 50w bulb with 16,000 lumens and makes me wonder if I could set it up somehow (can't do a retrofit or anything since the OHP is school property) and make it bright enough for the lighting conditions I experience during the day. I think I could find an old computer PS and use it and a fan as well.
😕 So, what do y'all think? Is it possible? Or would I be better of just buying more blackout cloth and covering the windows with it? What about the screen? would I need a professional one, or some silver enamel, or something like that? I appreciate your input and help for this DIYer-wannabe.

One more thing,
The OHP has only one lens (singlet lens). If I changed it to triplet lens, would the image/brightness improve any? And if so, what kind of triplets? Thanks again. 🙂

Hey Silver, how's your project going? Have you already received the parts?
TETUTIGRE: I'm not an expert in OHP, but I think you can't use this kind of dichroic in it.. It's a very small light with limited beam angle (8°), so it won't be the best choice for a big panel!
ACE&ALTEC: Thanks for your tips about fresnels! I'm looking for good fresnels for my small panels (4" and 5.6"), could you get me a good webstore to buy from? or maybe you hve them to sell..
Let me know!

hi disa81, i don't start my project 🙁 , i'll buy all parts next week, but before i must study something about fresnel lens, copy lens, objective and do a paypal account 😱
however i decided to use a lilliput 4" and not the 2.5".
by the way....compliments for your new work, nice setup (maybe you can reduce it a bit in dimension)....post some pics while it working 🙂

good news everyone, the guy i bought my panel is sending me a replacment free of charge and the best thing he's sending 2 of them, but there is one catch it wont be the panoview 540 it will be the 530 apparently the only difference is that its 1" smaller so that fairly good anyway right? means it can be that extra bit closer to the lamp.
Appriciate some feedback.
Thanks,
Ryan Edge
