... He told me that Siemens or Beko buy transistors in the millions and then the price got down to less then a cent per unit. They simply could not make a profit any more...
But this is just the economics of scale, I can´t see why customers buying large quantities would prevent Toshiba from making a profit.
I think it´s just the opposite, the high end market is to small for a large manufacturer like Toshiba.
I have some friends in Japan that talk to people that are able to produce old Toshiba dies. Also Linear Systems is working on it. Something will happen i suppose.
On the other hand you are right. Toshiba is not dealing directly with small customers. That goes over the distributors. That was also what my friend was recommending me. To ask the distributors, but is was too late.

Temperature is lowering and we already had some heavy showers but the beaches are still full of surfers and no hint of storms.
But you know this is the land of the "easy going" "A terra dos brandos costumes" so I do not expect anything drastic to happen in terms of weather.
Of course if we refer to economics, than the picture is really bad. We expect major difficulties during next year.
Wealthy people are now preparing to hide their Ferraris and walk around with stained clothes.... just in case.

Absolutly wonderfull...most of us get food every day...and we can sleep in warm claen sheets when we choose to do so....the problem we face now is really quite simple...far too maney are and have been living on somebody elses money...weather money have been borrowed or recived as wellfare payments from the gowerment in any form...overspending must stop or we all suffer...!! Here we're privilidged we can even have time and money to have a hobby
That's my name too

Make a design that don't rely on obsolete parts.

It is possible. 🙂
Cheers
Stein

Sure Stinius. Jan would say : been there, done that
Curiously enough i get very good reports about the sound quality when there are some 2SJ74 in it.

So what is next ?
I think this could be interesting :
No obsolete parts, particular low noise Fets of any gender.
Balanced input, i really think that can sound better.
No hum, comes with the balanced.
Relatively low cost, again no Fets.
Floating transimpedance RIAA with no ground reference.
DC coupled.
Low noise.
Wide bandwidth.
Low distortion.
PCB for easy Build.
PSU on board.
Preregulator external.
Choice of Stereo or double Mono.
Did i forget something ?

Sounds good to me. Just about finishing my "starless", hope this new project is not advancing too quickly ;-)
hope to have it ready over the weekend. as a new twist, I have included switches so I can toggle between transconductance and transimpedance - will be interesting to see the difference in sound! The only issue I have is that my cartridge is rather highish impedance....

Hesener, that will be exiting. Sure, you will get different gain factors when you switch. I do not see the new circuit as competition for the Starless.
The Starless is a nice circuit in it´s various incarnations but it needs an experienced builder and some exotic or obsolete parts.
The wish list for the new circuit comes from what i sense here. Particular keeping the design unchanged and making a PCB. The MPP thread was never designed to promote a single circuit but is more an exploration of what is possible. For advanced builders this is fine but it has confused people that simply would like to build something good. So this time i try to work out the circuit to the end and also make a PCB. I call this circuit "Paradise Lost".

This proposal is excellent Joachim and will be of great value to us silent lurkers! It is becoming increasingly difficult to buy best and/obsolete components in small quantities at less than exorbitant prices....especially here in the UK!

MC cartridges low and med impedance say up to 10 R and 50 R
PCB for easy build let me know if I can help.
I like the balanced in idea very much. (no hum from ac motor on turn table which is realy buzzing me off at present)
Joachim
Again realy enjoing this tread tanks for all your effort.
