So here is one I'm having a little trouble with, I saw over in the Off Topic room a couple of our friends were having a spirited political discussion when one lets rip on the other about about his apparent similarity to a common barnyard animal.

Oops. Regrettable.

However, it strikes me as out of context for this member to have been reprimanded considering the nature and name of the tread that he was participating in. "... Madman or Idiot"

I’ve suffered the presence of this thread for some time and will here express my distaste for my daily exposure to such a crass reference to the leader of the my nation. It is inappropriate and undignified to refer to the leader of any nation in such a context.

I also respect, such that they are, the views and opinions of the others who participate in this forum. I followed with much interest the events and discussions that lead to the formation of the Off Topic Forum.

I strongly believe however, that anyone who chooses to participate in what is by its title to be rough and frank discussion of frustrations and emotion, ought to put their cup on before stepping through the door. (Please insert the appropriate gender specific metaphor here as appropriate).

I can’t claim to be a gentleman. I do however attempt whenever within my limited emotional means to aspire to the virtues of treating others in the fashion I would hope that they would treat me.

Name calling, yup way out of bounce. However as a dissenting voice in a forum dedicated to the crude visceral diatribe,
His latest antics smack of NAZI GERMANY'S pre war propaganda
not particularly out of context considering these opening words.

If we are as a group to support such a forum and its intensions as "Off Topic" we must recognize that a thread such as this by its title will become a lightning rod for intolerant expressions. To endeavor to pick on a mans politics, nationality, religion or lifestyle in an intolerant and insensitive nature may be analogues to plucking short hairs off the tender parts of a dogs rear. It may be very obvious to the plucker why the plucked needs to be more conscious of the hairs. The plucker however shouldn’t be at all surprised when the dog turns around and bites him. The dog likely didn’t want to bite the plucker either. It is just met with an overwhelming unpleasant negation of its own existence that needs to be dealt with in the only way it can.

So if you’ve read this much of my angst, I’ll key you in on what I’m really ticked about…

23 views and no discussion. A technology that has the possibility of making it possible to provide dignified housing for every human on this planet (and perhaps some cool speakers too) and nothing!

I'm surprised in a way that you're the first to comment on this.
Name calling rarely advances anyones case, but it must be to the credit of all involved that the thread has not spiraled out of control. Moderator input has been minimal.

It is questionable whether this forum is a suitable place for such discussions, but it does allow a corner where venting can take place. What no one will dissagree with, is that the issues are highly imotive. I'm sure our discussions are "genteel" compared with some other discussion sites.

As for the title: If the thread had been called "Blaire - Madman or Idiot" it would not have bothered me at all, while if it had been called "British - Madmen or Idiots", I would have been upset. I wonder how I would have felt had I been pro-war....

On the printing issue: I seem to remember New Scientist saying that everything (Hi-Fi included) would be printed by now. That was in an article 2 or 3 years ago.
Housing: Well, freedom from attack is essential before you even think of building.

The comments you can read about this "famous leader" in some big newspapers are much more critical than the title of that thread. Instead of falling in the same göbbels style instinkts and try to forbidd asking critical questions one should better start to use some brain and think. Especially with same nationality as that famous leader. Do some amerikans really expect they can go in enemys countrys and thow bombs without the enemy strikes back? Do they really consider themselfs / Mr B. throwing bombs is less amoral than the enemy does this? reminds me much on Herrenrasse.

My personal view is that 99% of that thread is silly and ill-informed. But this is a forum for electronics geeks, not experts in history, politics, economics, and sociology.

My view as a mod is that I don't want to see members engaging in hostility and name-calling toward one another. What they say about politicians and other public figures is their own business, as long as it doesn't violate the naughty language rule.

A few quick words about my late night whining:

SY:
Sorry to have implicated you in my displeasure. I both understand and appreciate your efforts to us kids in line. In this specific instance your work was masterful and far better than I could have exercised myself.

The naughty words are left out for good reason. We also discourage the ruff stuff, for good reason.

The "other stuff" forum, I think, supports more than just political soap boxing. The one thing I would like to emphasize here is that those of us who choose to frequent it, should be able to do so without subject threads which may have as titles potentially offensive. As such those who chose not to subject themselves to these things will avoid the forum, and perhaps miss out on less political, more technical, discussions. Can’t say I blame anyone for doing so. If however the titles can be moderated to convey the intent of the thread without offending those who don’t see the relation of politics to DIYA… we are likely better serving the whole of our friends here.

Till:
Perhaps we could (should) spin this back into the thread in contention. Gobles style instincts (sorry I misplaced my umlaut) ... ohy, I see what your getting at, but you really should know ME before jumping there.

I have worked as a journalist (obviously on the technical side) and it is where I learned that a person should always respect the office of the person that is under discussion regardless of editorial policy or personal feelings. Obviously most journalists don’t follow theses rules either... which isn’t to say that they shouldn’t. I pick on them about this issue also, I cant excuse them the colloquial. I'm sure that there is a lot of printed material representing many critical views fare more extreme than represented. All journalism will by its nature carry both political and editorial agendas. Its not at all hard to identify the who and why in any situation, and yes this is always every bit as important to understand as is what is being said. (Paraphrased from Mcluhnen)

Dhaen:
Thanks, better than I could have said it (or did)
Housing, well perhaps it is putting the cart before the horse, but I do believe that one of the pillars to international security and piece comes from the day when those who choose it will be able to have the basic health, security and housing needed to sustain dignified life.

Big Parsnip:
Thanks for the reply.
Thanks also for your screen name too. Makes me laugh every time I see it. Its more than once pushed away the little grey clouds that follow me about reminding me to be a little more optimistic.

In closing,
Thanks for the kind words and considerations.
Is it possible that we might change the name of GBMoI in the name of politeness and tolerance w/out changing its intensions?

Holly Crap!
I’ve got to get to work.
(Wish I had as much to say about audio)
