Moderating

Hi P-A,
Sometimes the sheer size of a forum serves to attract people who are new to posting and the general rules of same. They have to learn somewhere, just like everything else. You are dealing with a different set of members. Of course, there is the clarity that your forum is .... well, your forum. You don't have to be nice. 😉

BTW, I envy you that you do run a forum. All the mechanics of it, dealing with the odd bad post. Just the amount of little bits of work must keep you at least crazy busy from time to time. I only moderate, here. I find this to be busy enough for me.

I am newb here so I understand my posts are under moderation and will not be posted till a moderator allowed it.

I am wondering how long does it take to make a post without being moderated?

Usually we wait five posts. You are now free of moderation.

I was just about to ask this same question. Took a fair bit of searching to find this. I say this should be a sticky or something easily accessible. Granted, I joined a couple months ago and didn't post until recently, so maybe I missed that when I first joined.

Hehehe it is a sticky, admittedly in "The Lounge" It might not really be in everyones face, esepecially since (assuming this is the same as the old "Off Topic" forum, this one is only viewable by subscribed members.

Anyway welcome midnightg35x I'm just being a little facecious due to a couple of glasses of red. Drink Posting.... <insert your deity here> help us 😉

Tony.

Awesome. Thanks!

It would be nice if moderators would publicly assume their "contributions". Just leave the message placeholder, replace the "offending" content with REMOVED and sign with your nickname.

That would help avoiding the moderation act to occasionally look like an arbitrary act performed by a biased *******.

Too many boxes to be left sometimes. We usually make an ''OT removed'' post for the whole cleaning act. The messages traces are not getting hard deleted in the system, just not visually breaking anymore.

It would also be nice if members didn't make offending posts. Most times if is very clear that they know that the post is offending.

It would be inappropriate I think to put one moderators name on a post deletion, because almost always it is a decision decided on by various mods. To put one name on the edit would distort the truth- imply that one mod acted unilaterally. While this sometimes is done, it would be the exception. So the likelihood of a biased moderator acting alone is unlikely.

Yes, but you can't control that. All you can control is your moderation policies and acts.

This is exactly what it would be required - to prove that moderation is the result of a policy and not of a bias. Not happening today.

I am really suprised here; I can't imagine you are so naive to think that moderation policies and rules (inluding bin time) are uniformly and unbiased enforced. Yes, I know, moderators are humans, they are volunteering, etc... However, by looking what's happening, I certainly doubt they are less biased (for various reasons, from education to a vested interest) than the general population of contributors here.

To put one name on the edit would distort the truth- imply that one mod acted unilaterally. While this sometimes is done, it would be the exception. So the likelihood of a biased moderator acting alone is unlikely.

Sorry, once again, you are either naive or live in Wonderland. Assuming the moderation act would make the mod think twice before deciding to act.

BTW, to eliminate any doubts, I know there were occasions when I wrote posts that were inapproriately tolerated. So there was/is an occasional bias in my favour as well. Not consistent, other absolutely innocent posts vanished in thin air (happened yesterday, e.g.). Which to me means exactly what I originally stated: it's not about moderation policies, it's about biased moderation.

I also can't imagine you don't realize that the current forum content structure (and contributors) are largely decided by the moderation policies. But perhaps you are happy with the current status, where valuable contributors are largely replaced by ignorant goons, it's the headcount that matters, not the quality, what the <blip> do I know...

Perhaps you need a recent example? Ok, while somebody is carefully reading and filtering my posts, this one proudly sits on the first page of the Solid State forum, and nobody seems to care about.

This forum was created to talk about audio, build projects, be a place where likeminded people could exchange knowledge and experience.
The great majority is just doing that at diyAudio.
Some are here to stir the pot, other have been appointed to clean their mess.
Mostly, members are very helpful in that, just as you are now with pointing us to the link above. I will move it.
Thanks. 🙂

Edit: Since it's a poll, it is still in the correct forum.
Thanks for looking anyway.

I too find it interesting, that there is such inconsistency of the moderation lately.

Last example that really made me wonder, is two weeks of bin time for GK for calling somebody a moron, but people like Curly Woods, whom insults just about anybody whom does not agree with him (yes, name calling as well, and not anything nicer than moron), seems to pass the moderation teams attention.

GK is a well known big contributor of Diyaudio, but gets 2 weeks in the bin, for an insult.

Curly Woods has never contributed anything as far as I know, but is allowed to insult whomever he pleases repeatedly.

How does that add up?

Magura 🙂
