Mini Karlsonator (0.53X) with Dual TC9FDs

@xrk971 I am trying my first 0.4 build for TC9FD18 and while putting it together, I think I ran into some problems with the schematic. I triple checked all my
measurements and angles (circled blue). The highlighted measurements are what don't add up. I put the measurements I get in red scrawl. Am I the only one getting it wrong?

So let's say a know-nothing wants to try drivers other than the familiar Faital / TC9 suspects... what are the most desirable T-S specs for implementation of a random full-range in a 0.4x or 0.5[ish]x? I know this question has already been answered a billion times in this thread, probably, but darned if I can find the answers given. My apologies accordingly, and thanks X / all!

Thanks xrk! For the Vas, I presume you mean "gross" box volume (i.e., volume calculations based on raw outer dimensions)? When doing something like the "classic" double-TC9s-in-an-0.53x, do you simply 2x the Vas of the driver to know if you're in the right ballpark? Have I outed myself as a chronic overthinker yet?

Yes, 2x Vas is approximately equal to total box volume. The rear chamber is about 2/3rds the front if you want to do it from a bass reflex standpoint. But Karlsonator is actually a mass loaded TL with K aperture exit vent so the whole box can be considered the total volume. It’s not super critical, 20% off is ok for a higher Qts driver.

I was going through my storage space and found these mini scaled foam core Karlson (not Karlsonator) speakers with a curved baffle. I made these maybe 10yrs ago and forgot all about them. It’s a sealed K15 style design scaled down to a 3.5in driver. I put two side by side in another enclosure with a splitter centerbody for a PA style horn. With 3FE22’s wired in parallel it’s about 96dB at 4ohms. The dispersion is great and sound quality not too shabby. Quite enjoyable. I’m using a 10in powered sub below 100Hz.

Towards the end of the video you can see how the smaller speaker modules slip out of the horn shell. I think these are the most colorful foam cores I have. I had some orange and blue faced foam core back then.

I would like to share some photos of my 0.53x Karlsonator build with PA130-8 (Faitals are not easily available in Finland). Boxes are made of 13 mm Baltic birch plywood scrap pieces. As a part time hobby, it took over a half year to construct and it still lacks some finishing.

Now, I have listened it some months and would say it is suprisingly good sounding speaker. Without any electric filter it works well with most music. Subjectively said the bass response is as good as in my Genelec 8030C studio monitors. It has its own special nature and with some audio material it feels much bigger speaker. I wouldn´t use it as only one reference studio monitor but in living room HIFI, small PA and as instrument speaker it is worth of every money and effort. Even my wife have accepted its sound quality though she regards it little bit extraordinary-looking.

Thank you very much for the idea, drawings and instructions.

@xrk971 After looking at this a few times, I'm beginning to wonder about using something like your dual Karlson for a center speaker with Karlsonators as L & R for my television. . . thoughts on this application?
The Karlsonator doesn’t lie sideways for a low profile. But as Skylar says, not sure you need a center channel. For center channel, human speech or voice is usually important. Perhaps a plain sealed box is sufficient?
