MarkAudio MA200-M + DDVP-20(TQWT)

Hi Nandappe!
Thanks 😊 for doing speaker driver testing for us!!
So, Im guessing that from your research the MA200-m driver is a worthwhile but more expensive bolt in upgrade for the SB Acoustic 8 inch “Full range “ driver?
If so, then I may have to invest in a pair….

I think it depends on JohnnyDee's preference whether to buy it or not.

I think SB Acoustic 8 inch is better in terms of cost performance.
If you are looking for three-dimensional localization, I would say MA200-M.

Thanks 😊 Nandappe!
I already have SB Acoustic 8 inch driver and I think it is Amazing for the money!!
I’m 😢, I don’t know what 3 dimensional localization is..
I am hoping that the MA200=m has more detail, dynamics, bass energy and nicer vocals….
As it is 4x dearer in Australia 🇦🇺, Im hoping that sound improvements are noticeable??
I know that this is a difficult question…..
Thanks 😊 John D

Dear Nandappe.

I am a hobbyist who has been building audio.
I have been building mostly multi-way speakers until now, but recently I have been feeling a bit tired of the sound of the excessive amount of information(may be looking for focused sound), and I have become curious about full-range speakers, and while searching for information, I came across this great thread. I am still lacking in experience with full-range speakers, but I am very grateful for the information I have gained. Looking at this thread, I see that you are using the DDVP-20 cabinet. I would like to know why you chose this cabinet, and what else you would like to try. For reference, I have experience with bass reflex and sealed cabinets, but little experience with other types of cabinets.

Welcome Hyunsuk!

I’m just a hobbyist too, but I can tell you why I personally used this type of cabinet..

I looked at Back loaded horns, but they seem to partner well with small valve amps… I don’t have one, I have a very strong 200watt solid state amp, so I realised that the speakers didn’t have to be extremely efficient.. Also Horns can be very big, so that might not suit my house.
A lot of box speakers I had listened to seemed a bit dull and lacked dynamics..

So I learned about “ Voigt Pipes”, but they are very tall, and my wife didn’t like the look 👀.

I had almost given up when I realised that you can fold the pipe, making it easy to construct and the design fits into the house much better…. And the Best part is that it it can sound amazing 🤩!

The pair I’m listening to at the moment is a much modified example of the original version…

I probably forgot a few things…

One reason for choosing this type of cabinet, is that I have large room and have found that I need at least 8 inch (200mm) drivers to fill the room with sound.. ( my friend has a pair of my speakers in a smaller room, about 4 x4.5 metres and when played loud it sounds like a concert!! Lots of musical energy!)

Some people have used similar designs for much smaller drivers, hence, smaller boxes…..

My previous speakers were Electrostatic panels, and I went into the single driver type of sound easily, except the bass on the single drivers is better, and not “ disconnected” from the panel ( midrange/ treble). Also I’m sure that there are more details in the single driver and musical instruments sound more real!!!.

It’s a very different journey!
If you have access to quality plywood, ( others get results from MDF) and can cut it accurately, then the rest is fairly easy!

Hi Hyunsuk.

DDVP brings out the best in a full range.
It is different from sealed and bass reflex, and does not have the quirks of a back-loaded system.

I recommend the 4” for a trial.

I'm not convinced that this dip (which is also shown on the manufacturer's datasheet) can be dismissed quite so easily. Dips of this magnitiude are by no means universal. When I asked about it before, @Scottmoose suggested it is where the MA200 transitions out of pistonic operation.
It's not due to the room if people in Germany can reproduce it under different test conditions. Graphs are from @Ivo 's link. I think Scott is correct, it's a transition zone. Look at the impedance bump and the ringing - that's not because of the room or the step response.

The midrange looks fantastic and then the treble goes all crazy. I'll leave that debate for people who can hear that high. However, it looks like a lot of ringing.

Thanks Arthur for your research!
This driver is on my radar… I listened to Nandappe’s excellent “air recordings “ through the lady wife’s AirPods..
The MA driver was different compared to the SB Acoustics driver.. metallic VS Organic..
Personal taste..
If i bought it, I might like it, but it’s 4x the price!
An amazing driver for all the “WIZZWER CONE HATERS”, I would think 🤔!!
And I do like the colour……………………
