Caps take ages to burn in.
...and cakes take a while to burn but that doesn't seem to stop my girlfriend!
I have just fitted 2 2k 24 turn Bourne resistors, bass now massive?
everything now ready for the poly's, removed caps, sucker is far better than tape for removing solder, always used sucker before, but tried tape, rubbish. one suck and joint clear.
Come on.

I wish I'd got my solder sucker earlier! I can't believe how much easier it is.
I just did the source direct bypass with Kimber Twist and now I'm browsing replacement pots. I was looking at the 50K TKD 2CP-2508-S, but it doesn't look from the pictures I've seen as though the volume knob would fit properly - it has the little blip to lock it to the fascia, but unlike the Alps pots, the end of the shaft looks completely cylindrical with no flat edge. Anyone know what the deal is there? Is it easy enough to make the TKD fit?

still waiting my caps to come! ordered kimber cable for internal wiring. Brent on looking closer at your pics the cable to the big caps back to the board seem massive, i was thinking - 1-2mm, what did you use?
Happy new year all, tc

Here's the current state of my amp. I've done the BGs, silver micas and source direct bypass with Kimber wire as per Brent's list. I've also added a few more Black Gate FKs in various places (most notably the res caps) and an RF-filtered IEC socket. I went through 7 junior hacksaw blades putting that in! 🙂

Looks impressive! How does it sound? Did the sound soften up at all when you installed that IEC filter?
Simon
It's certainly more laid back now, but mostly it's just far more detailed and coherent in music that previously got a bit muddied together.
I don't have access to any other good equipment to compare it to though, so I'm going from my rapidly fading memory of what it was like before. I'm modding my CD player at the same time and have lots of new caps burning in right now so the system sounds different every day for better or worse (I'm doing too much at once to keep track, basically). There was one evening when it sounded absolutely incredible and I'm hoping it will settle back there in the end.
I ordered the filtered IEC before I saw Brent's comments about them killing dynamics. I spent a couple of hours toggling between the stock captive lead and the filter before I cut the hole, but I have a unfiltered Furitech socket on order so I'll compare again when I get that.

OK, I ripped out the RF filter and cranked up the volume. It's obvious now that it was killing bass and drums in a big way. It can rock like it used to again, but with all the benefit of the lower distortion from the other upgrades. Definitely steer clear of those filters, triocat! 🙂
It's good that you heard it for yourself and are sorting it out. The Furutech connectors seem well made.
thank you for your trial, I will NOT be fitting a filter then.
on another note have fitted a Russ andrews super clamp kit inside an MK unswitched socket. safer but not sure of any improvement, was going to install the kit in the amp but decided not too.

Ben -
You need to use passive filters as these don't add impedance. Good that you noticed the difference though.
Triocat -
The Russ Andrews stuff is basically a rip off. The Super clamp does not do a lot other than protect if there is a surge.

it was to stop surges as in the country things do go puff puff off. thought that it may be some improvement though, the kit was 6.15£ the rest of RA kit is way more considering this kit is all thats in it.

update - fitted poly caps and the sound was more freeer? then changed the internal cables to kimber cables on the direct route. the sound is very open detailed with better treble and rounder base. it sounds superb. please note the this playing a iphone through a cheap cable to amp and then Qmicro to tangent small speakers. the system it will fit into will be a CD17KI with mission and Vandamme cables. (CD17 has not been fiddled with was thinkinh of a new clock?)
next up big caps- BHC 22k 63v to replace the 801 and 802, these are big and require drilling the back to fit the brackets.

Superb 🙂
Have a look at F&T caps from Audio Cap, F&T make the caps for Mundorf and for me are superb, much better than the BHC.

they do not have any 22000uf, these have been nard to find, got 5 BHC for 15£, HFC range from 20-50£, will try these first and then consider changing.
do you think the F&T 1500uf would be any good, says it is made for KEF subwoofer
thanks

I know you mean 15000uF 😉. That would be a good value to get, you can always tag another set of caps across those in the future if required.
Give Matthew a ring @ Audio Cap he might have some larger values knocking about or be able to get you some.
