Marantz CD63 & CD67 mods list

Hi chaps,

This powerpoint file caught my eye.

Seems to answer a few questions some of us had about grounding around the DAC.

Note that supply currents for SM5872BS are:
Digital - 15mA
Clock - 3ma
Analog - 1ma

Seems to back up what Illimz was saying (before you lot scared him off!).

Nice to have it explained in a Sesame Street fashion with lots of diagrams.

Edit: It's from Analog Devices, who know a thing or two about DACs.
Hi Glenn

This makes sence....

😉

I've undertaken a few more mods today as it's been a while.

I replaced the 2x BHC Aerovox 40V 10000uF caps (for clock psus) and replaced with 2X 35V 22000uF Mundorf HC.

I have also ripped out 4x Audiocon super reg that fed the HF RF and Servo 5V rails and replaced direct to pcb with 4X SPower regs. This now means I am running 21x SPowers :cannotbe:

Also I have moved the 2.2uF Mundorf Supreme Silver/Golds on the output externally so that I can fit some more inside across them to boost the bass a little.

Here is the upgaded PDF

I treated my CD63 to a new interconnect I knocked up yesterday (took aaages).

Oh, it's good, beating my previous copper one and maybe even beating these solid cu connectors & Kimber 4TC we tried!

Hi Guys, long time no speak.

Been skulking around the thread for a while when I've had the chance, some great work been going on, especially Ricardo and Brent - those pics of the SPower forest look awesome, mate!

Those interconnects look nice, Simon. Is the ribbon from a PC or something? I've seen a silver interconnect somewhere on eBay that's supposed to be a flat conductor coiled round in some way, and I wondered whether you've used a flat single conductor or a ribbon like I said?

Keep it going guys.

Cheers
Jim

Hi Brent

Awesome work !!! I am really glad you keep doing these things.

How much uF can we increase in the output caps to get a better bass rendition ?

I read about bypassing these caps with a 0.47uF BG N... is it a good idea ?

PS

Love the outside caps look 😀

Hi Ricardo

Thanks 😉 I wired them with Kimber AGSS

The uF on the output will depend on a few factors. Are your leads attenuated and what your amps input is.

What ever you have at the moment tack another cap of equivalent uF across it and see if there is an improvement in bass. If not then it's not necessary. I have no issues with the 2.2uF at home but on my works system the bass is definatly rolled off. So I have fitted a second pair of 2.2uF caps across and the bass is back.

What uF do you have now?

Hi Jim, thanks. They're Mundorf copper foil, sourced from Lee. It comes bare so I insulated this with masking tape. I've since redone my pre-amp wiring with it, using acrylic pcb lacquer as the insulator. I would like to try something non-plastic though, such as the controversial C37 lacquer. If I went that far I'd source pure silver foil too I think.

Cheers Jim

It sounds ok too!! Simon heard it running today at my work, will have to get him round to mine soon for a session.

Brent

Even in that sub-optimal room you can tell it's a special source, good work mate. Would love to hear it soon!
