Remove the chip to see if the fuses stop blowing. You could buy a faulty 63 off ebay and use it for spares.

So you mean there are no alternatives....

Just cut R149..... no heat on the chip now... voltages on resistors are:avr300 said:Remove the power to the chip. It's only a lift of one resistor.
R150 = +10.5v
R149 = -12.3v
So the psu is ok

Can you please suggest a best way to remove the consumers ?
Remove the wire mesh connecting to the drive mech ?

Upgrading quite a few cd players at the moment, we have a Marantz CD6002 and Cambridge Audio Azur 640 V2 in. Both nice cd players with a different approach to where the design of the circuits. Marantz goes for its usuall nice caps in vital areas approach and decent rail seperation where the Cambridge as fitted a better TX and concentrated on the clock and servo areas. A combination of the two ideas would sound very good.
The Marantz has the edge overall but both sound very good for budget cd players (£250-£300 range) both miles better than a cd63 in standard form.

Hi Brent,
So the big question.....
With a total budget of (say) £500 for a player and mods would you start with second hand 63/67 or a new CD6002 or 640. Or something else entirely?

Pete
Modded 63 everyday of the week. £200 would be loads better on a 63 than any of those two.
The money you would have left over for modding a 63 would push the advantage so much in the favour of the 63.

I think I paid over the odds for my CD63KI @ £180, and it's had maybe £300-£400 of mods so mine is perhaps just a touch more pricey than what you're talking about.
The sound? Approaching £2000 worth of new/full price player.

Yes, what you say makes sense.
I wasn't sure whether the modern Dacs conferred an advantage that wouldn't be overtaken by upgrading other components around it.
I've tried both the 67 and 640 route. Not sure that I can tell the difference to be honest (but that's probably down to the state of my ears rather than anything else 😉 )

I think the Cambridge 640 offers a lot more than an unmodded old Marantz, but the reason for it is in the power supplies, power regulators and layout (it would appear), rather than the DAC.
In DIY, given time, we can largely fix the problems and make the most of a (probably) good DAC chip!

I've had two around that price in the past

Removing consumers and aplying power, I get a glowing fuse.
Maybe this proves the ic is shorted inside.
I am searching for a replacement right now.
Remember that this is not the first time it happens... This ic did get very hot in the past.... the reason why is not clear to me.
Maybe you could help.

toroidal transformer in 8400
Ray,
In your 8400 modifications you've used a toroidal transformer for the analog supply, pictured here: http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/ra.vdsteen/pictures/sa8400/SA8400_toroid_1.jpg
What specification transformer did you use? Nothing is listed where you listed everything.
Thanks.
