Marantz CD63 & CD67 mods list

Hi chivvyp,

Im not sure what your system is like but the changes youve made are considerable. In the past when ive made changes and noticed no improvements its been cos my kits not set up right.
I moved the speakers further apart and away from the wall and wow it was different. Try it and see🙂

Hi,

Fitted a new psu (toroid + schottkys + smoothing caps) for my clock and split DAC regs at the weekend. Surprisingly it worked 1st time (2nd if you count the time when I forgot to reconnect the mains lead🙂 ).

Have to say, I've not noticed any great improvement though.

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete,

Splitting the DAC regs on mine only made a small difference. Then feeding these from different, oversized, psus made a large difference.

The clock psu was very nice for me. And the clocks love good regs! What clock are you using?

Ah, more CD72 likeness. It looks like a clone with better DAC!
I bet it's going to sound great when properly modded

Ray

You can bet on it's sounding awesome already. Remember, Philips invented the CD - every other must be clones.

The only thing that's worries me is when I have to replace the CDM9/44. That's a bitch to find. Perhaps it's would be something like transplanting the laser from a CDM4/19, I think i read that somewhere? :xeye:

Well, Marantz = Philips, at least it used to be... it wouldn't surprise me if there is a Marantz equivalent.

It should be possible to only replace the laserdiode. The trick is to find the right one. If it's a regular three-pin diode, you could give it a try with an old defective unit and see what happens if you replace it by a generic diode.

The whole swing-arm with laser onboard might be interchangeable between CDM9/44 and CDM4/19. I'll just wait and tackle problems as they occurs.

More laser dirty talk?

Careful, you'll have Brent bragging about how he can change one in 4.3 nanoseconds!

Anyway, does anyone know if I can get those adhesive-backed stand-offs from Farnell? I can't find them...

What other tips and tricks do you have for fixing extra boards?

Brent/Ray - you seem have the problem solved....

Cheers,
Glenn

You should notice good improvements in detail and timing with those mods!!. What Va tx did you use?

Hi,

Using a Nuvotem Transformer,toroidal,7.0VA,2x115V pri,2x7V sec into schottky diodes bypassed with 100pf x7r caps and then a 16v 4700u pana FC smoothing cap.

This puts out about 11.5 v and feeds into Audiocom superclock 3 and the split regs (audiocom superreg for DAC ana, LM470ATs for DAC digi and dac clock).

Maybe I just need to give it some more time or (more likely) the cumulative improvements have overtaken my ageing ears
🙂

Now now. I never said that! 4.7 nanoseconds was the correct answer :clown:

Sounds like a decent enough upgrade to me. I am suprised you can not tell a diff straight away. The FC do take time to settle though I find.

Let us know after the weekend to see if its improved.

Hmm, other than the detail gains, I'd expect a better sense of timing and rhythm. I'd also expect a more solid sound.

Get your favourites on and let us know if anything leaps out at you!

BTW, a super reg on the clock may make more difference than one on the DAC. Not 100% sure but that's my hunch.

I just thought I'd let you know that the CD67 that I bought, I managed to get to roughly the same point as my 63KI before I went one mod too far and broke it.

Just need to transfer the 63KI transformer across and then I won't touch much more (famous last words 🙂)

Thanks to those who have helped me get a decent player so far.

Keep the talk up on the NOS DAC's. I'm interested in trying something like that as a separate unit. I've almost managed to convince the Chief Financial Officer to let me buy an Altmann DAC, but that won't be for a while.

Hi,

Don't get me wrong, the player sounds great and I'm very happy with it.

Just the delta from adding the new psu hasn't been particularly great.

The previous change that I made ( 0.1% tol resistors + silver mica caps around the opamps and dac) were much more immediately noticeable.

Anyway, I'll give it some more extended listening over the weekend and maybe it will get more apparent.

Like I said, I've maybe just reached the point where my ears don't recognise the improvements anymore. If that's the case it'll save me money anyway, at least until I start modding my ears - maybe I should start a new thread for that!

😉

Pete
