Hi... Sorry to aske in this post. I have a Marantz SA8400 that dont wont read cd or SACD with a brand new original laser. Is there a tips what to look at ? It only spin up TOC is display and then No Disk. Is there also a know place to get the newest CD-R Firmware update for this unit ?
Hi McJan,
Are you a technician and have you got test equipment?
Fixing things is not paint by numbers.

The SA 8400 uses the HOP1200 laser. New lasers are not necessarily good ones as quality control seems to be suspect. It sometimes depends on the source of the laser. Perhaps just try another laser. And perhaps try a different source for the laser.Hi... Sorry to aske in this post. I have a Marantz SA8400 that dont wont read cd or SACD with a brand new original laser. Did you actually observe the spinning disc? With these Marantz players a spinning disc that does not read the TOC usually will flash ERROR, not NO DISC.
I believe that Marantz Service kept the firmware under wraps only at the Service Centers. But with the sales of Marantz to Sound United and then Masimo, a lot of things went a bit wonky. Perhaps you already know that.
Here is a link to Donberg, a very reliable supplier: https://www.donberg.ie/search?query=HOP1200

The Laser is okay and have try with two and the original that make 3 laser and all make the same. With CD it spins up and run for 2-3 sec and TOC is display, then it stop and spin up again and then no disk is display. with sacd it spin up for 2-3 sec and TOC is display and then it stop and no disk is display. I was hoping some one got the latest firmware for CD-R update or knows how to reset the unit or what it is the fault....
McJan,
If you are certain the lasers are good, then you will need to do as Chris recommends.

where is the RF point ? cant find it if i should check the eye pattern. i think the servo board has issues... But please share where the test point for RF is. :-D Tanks in advance
Hi... Thanks for the help you tried to give, others are more judgemental with me I will seek out myself using a professional technician "as I am 🙂"... The reason I ask is because I think the service manual is lacking in the drive diagram and I would like to see closer to the servo circuit and not quite referring to the RF test point so I could see the Eye Pattern. Since I had time today at the workshop, I looked closer at this. IC501 had a loose connection and after reflow of IC501 it plays perfectly again. I also contacted my old workplace who sent me the latest and newest firmware from the Marentz service portal page which I unfortunately no longer have access to and which must be burned on a DVD-R. The newest version is called v.618. I wish you all a happy weekend..

CXD1881AR.
Looking at the manual, pin 57 is the RF output pin, you should have an eye pattern there. It goes into pin 75 (I think) on the CXD1885Q.

Hi, Have just purchased a KI sig 63 that was described as not reading discs, was going to change out the entire tray/ laser module out of a working 63 SE to test and noticed this damaged cap. Don't know if it exploded or just been damaged by previous owner , thought it was a tantulum but is it a multilayered ceramic or something else , says 0.1 j.63 so presume it 0.1uf and is it 63v ? any help would be appreciated TIA .
Looks like it is mechanically broken. Looks like a poly type capacitor, so polypropylene would be my replacement choice. It would be nice to see which capacitor it is on the schematic.
Its c161 think it's on the servo circuit , have managed to find some with the same markings on fleabay , The one in the same place on the SE is marked 104J which when I googled found the 0.1 63J so ordered a 5 pack , wonder if that is the actual issue with it not reading disc , struggled to find it on the schematic for the standard 63 , c161 doesnt appear to be there .
In the servo, replace with a similar part. Buy it new, not off Ebay or similar. It doesn't have to be the same make or look the same. Just the same package and rough size so it fits properly. In this case, radial leaded. Measure the distance between leads or hole spacing. Buy something the same or slightly smaller. Never go larger. 63 volt is very common, but in this circuit the voltages are lower. I'm not looking at the diagram so I can't say more.
Local parts distributors were at one time more common, but that is an excellent place to look.

This is why I keep a huge boy with old PCB's of all kinds of defective gear. Such components don't age. Buying them at reasonable cost is getting harder from year to year,as SMD is replacing anything. The days of brick and mortar stores with a thousend drawers and parts for Pennys are over.
