Looking for Krell KAV-400Xi schematic / service manual

Seems to be neither slow or fast blow type but time delay bussman MDL type instead after looking again at the below photo .. spiral fuse element ?

Seems quite hard to get with none from usual element14 and rs component with only 32v version but not 250v nor any higher than 50v noted on schematic 🤒

Hi escksu, Unfortunately despite having the bussmann specification, I still do not know what to order. Can you help to check any marking on the end cap of the fuse to advise ? 🙏

I am a bit beyond saving $ as I cannot do recap myself and the blue led mod to also replace the faulty stock red ones already cost me sgd300 by a skilled German retired engineer locally with still pending recap of another sgd800 estimated as well as hundreds on new caps .. foolish perhaps on this old kav-400xi but already in the slippery slope 😰

Cheers.

PS: The kav-400xi is not with me and the German gentleman is away on vacation

Hey escksu,

Thanks a million ! 🙏🙏

Checked digikey and while bp/ml-10 shown as 125V, same Bussmann 32v rated shown on specification as with earlier finding of ebay seller that also stated bp/ml-10 as 250V ?? 🤦‍♂️

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2854068430...zMvOCI_Qs-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Bp/mdl 1-10 does show 250V on specification but many other distro sites and ebay sellers indicate 100mA rating and not required 10A while mdl 2-10 and 3-10 are 200mA and 300mA ratings .. hence all these confusion to ME on a simple required fuse 🥺

Cheers.

Hi,

Krell nicely came back after my 2nd email to advise bussmann part # of MDL-10 for these internal fuses of kav-400xi and order placed with Element14 for shipping from usa. Not sure of this 32v rating concern raised and perhaps time based type alleviates +/-50vdc of appreciated schematic from Dan and/or +/-50vdc is not directly applied to the fuses but enough pondering to rush ahead for soonest receipt for recapping ... worse case to polish up stock ones if not suitable as also recommended by escksu.

Aside to escksu, figured physical fuse will still not yield bussman part # and hence did not wait further for your help with this help from Krell. Cheers.

Also not sure about the required fuse clips which I did not request of krell but had bought 1A3400-09-R and hope repair engineer finds them suitable .. can only see that the solder pitch of about 10mm is closest.

Just to say, this ignorant me figured out the following but kindly correct if otherwise:

1. Prefix BK of bussmann part # simply means from bulk packed .. I ordered this for AGC 8 type at 1/3 $ since already ordered more critical BK/MDL-10 as non-BK ones are not available from Element14

2. Subfix R of bussmann part # simply means ROHS compliance version

Hope this helps other owners in the future and will update further outcomes accordingly.

Cheers.

No, you cannot use 32v fuses. The power input is 50v so voltage rating has to be higher than 50v
32vac or 45.3vpp from Bussmann spec and should be +/-50vdc on schematic should be fine then especially after krell's advice 🤞🤞

There is simply no other bussmanm MDL needed at 10A >32vac ones and it is not known that these internal fuses are blowing up until I find out 😅

Oops ... retired german engineer doing the recap informed me that required 22uf 25v smd caps for the power pcba are missing from my provided ones 🤦‍♂️

I had made a mistake to cut and copy the description in the ppt slides for the 47uf 25c ones on the front panel but missed to change to 22uf 25v instead and messed up 😰

While already ordered needed 22uf 25v hxc type for initial and still valid preferred high temp versions of 105c aluminium ecaps except pre coupling for preamp pcba with 85c nichicon UES bipolar as well as 125 or 135c for latest smd hybrid polymer ecap, any advice on what are the roles of the highlighted ecaps in red, yellow, blue and black i.e. coupling or decoupling or bypass to this non EE newbie modder ?

More importantly, I just realised that these high temp to 125c new hybrid polymer caps hxc 22uf not previously available 20 yrs ago when this krell was released while having nice >2X rated ripple current of high 550mA vs stock udd's 230mA, its esr is much lower only 100mohm vs 760mohm or 80mohm vs 900mohm seen below !! Any concern on read oscillation of ultra low esr of chosen high temp hxc or gya caps if at all considered as ultra low esr with consolation that german repair engineer does have scope to detect any oscillation ??

TIA and cheers.

Polymer and hybrid (combining polymer and wet electrolyte) electrodes with significantly lower and more stable ESR are available on the market as well, that address most of the disadvantages of the wet electrolytic capacitors reducing the ohmic losses, dry out effect (reliability and stability improvement) and ESR temperature dependency.

Would love to know any recommended mods you guys suggest making to these. Certain opamps, caps? I can do the work myself, but I like that LED mod over the stock red. Where did you pick up the blue 7 segment display for it?

Dan
Hey Dan,

Finally got my recapped and repair display modded blue 14 yrs old kav-400xi back 🥳

As promised, the blue leds are marked 4102BB and while rated at higher current, they are certainly bright enough and available cheaply at aliexpress:

Just found this amazing item on AliExpress. Check it out! SG$3.64 | 10pcs X 4102 AB BB 0.4inch 1digit BLUE 8 segment led display 4102AB/4102BB

Hi All,

Finally picked up my recapped 14 yrs old kav-400xi after much efforts and $ due to needing paid repair shop but had been a great journey with all the assistance received here especially Dan with the schematics.

All's well and believe it is better sounding than new and certainly more preferred to me with updated blue display and leds .. except the mute button for obvious reason.

More importantly for reliability, except for still preferred 85c nichicon es coupling for sound quality in preamp board:

  • all smd ones are now long life 125c version except the tiny 22uf 6.3v one that I failed to find 125c version but at least of long life ones
  • critical power cap 8x6800uf 105c had been replaced by 4x15000uf mundorf 125c.

Initial audition is obviously/expectedly positive with new caps while expecting somemore improvement after run in and believe the expensive mundorf with now total 60,000uf also plays a significant role .. bass is still great of Krell signature but now with more body/texture and arguably more extended.

Will continue a bit more in this journey with sample measurements of the removed capacitors to share how much degradation if at all after these 14 yrs.

Poorer but happy man.

Cheers.

Richard

PS: cheap ebay univeral replacement remote works fine 😃
