Hi, I'd guess spring loaded connectors are fine as it is a PA driver designed to be lugged around, should be durable and problem free. Could be that they are designed to be field replaceable as well. I remember reading that solder connections are not done in professional applications in general, as it's more prone to break with vibration than mechanical connection like a crimp.
For home hifi I suppose you could use anything you fancy, because it's more important to have emotional impact than durability in a way, make sure they look good and make proper contact.
edit. quick search seems to indicate solderless (crimp) connections are widely used in automotive and aerospace for instance, where there is vibration stressing the connections.

That could very well be the case. I'm curious what would happen if the 5208 or 5210 were "nude"?I think a 5210 on a baffle that becomes narrower at the top (with corresponding EQ boost 150-500Hz) will blend very well with the 15OB350 and handle the EQ boost better than the 5208, and be more visually to your liking.
Interestingly, the 5208 and the 5210 have some surprising differences, specifically that the 5210 has much lower Q values. Would that change things more than expected, or would the MiniDSP control overcome it?
I don’t think those differences will amount to much, and I expect you can use the same crossover and then deal with any differences in DSP.
That's interesting... I'd have guessed that Qts dropping from 0.61 to 0.38 would change things more... but I'm also not a speaker designer, so my guess is worthless. 😀
Speaking of which, I keep finding that I'm interested in different combinations of the drivers you used, but with zero skills, measurement tools, and knowledge beyond being able to build stuff, I'd better stick closer to the designs you've already proven out. I do like the Radian options for up top due to the lower cost of entry to get going on a budget with the Al membrane, with the Be as an optional upgrade path.

The question really is whether this is an issue that can be fixed with EQ or one that can't successfully be fixed that way. This one likely is, so once corrected the result should be more or less the same.

The three are nearly identical, despite the different Qs and impedances of the drivers. It shows how insensitive a series crossover is to driver impedance variations.
Thanks for running these simulations, Perry! Perhaps difficult for me to fully understand due to insufficient background for interpretation, but I can absolutely agree that these are remarkably similar-looking curves! At a guess, quite remarkable given the driver differences.

The response of the drivers was not included in the simulations. So if the drivers do have different responses, then you don't want the simulations to be the same.. or you'll have to make up the difference in another way. Am I understanding correctly that a BB with the 5210 would have a 96 db sensitivity, vs 100 db for the B&C (and 95 db for the Birch with the 5208c)?
Probably mostly academic since those are all first watt territory for my critical listening. I'm not actually sure how high I run in dance party mode? Will have to check next time. 🙂

I do not have FRD data for 5210. However you could get away with using 5208 data instead, in OB application it's not going to be all that different.
Crossover for 5208 is NOT the Bitches Brew crossover, it's the Live Edge Dipole crossover.
You can make Live Edge Dipoles with either 15OB350 or Kappa 18LF woofer, and either 5208 or 5210 midrange. The original passive schematic and DSP files will get you off to a good start. You will need to make your own measurements and tweak the design from there.

thx have not tried to upload the flex eight file, not sure if the Minidsp Software would allow to import and to modify the channels. You do not have files for the Flex as well ?
I don't know for sure but I doubt files for Flex 8 are interchangeable with Flex. I have never used a Flex so I don't have files for it.
I may be wrong but they appear to use the same configuration tool (MiniDSP Device Console) so it looks like you could manually copy the filter settings from my Flex Eight files and reproduce them in the Flex environment. This would not be very difficult.
Don't hold me to this though. You need to contact MiniDSP to find out for sure.

I'm curious whether you decided to get the digital out version to use with external DACs?Oh wow! I missed that! Good find Niels, sorry I didn't look at it more closely. Well that's a pretty cool little product! And actually I can get it on sale today being black friday. I'd still need 2 DAC's, but I can live with that. I think I'm going to give that a try!
Or conversely, what the MiniDSP Flex 8's internal DACs would compare to for standalone DACs?
