Popped down to my local builders center because the batteries on my Makita cordless drill just aren't holding any charge no more. I was hopeful that I'd just be able to order a couple of new batteries but it seems the couple of year old model is now obsolete with no option for replacements.

I've already mentioned it early in the thread but I like the Bosch blue stuff and so had a look at what the builders center had and come across a cordless/corded drill package that was on special offer. Didn't intend to spend quite that much but from experience this stuff lasts forever.

I also picked up a few mini biscuit cutters as I've decided to take motions advice regarding cabinet stability. The plan is to drill the tweeter cabinet top and bottom then pass some threaded rod through, tighten up and fix from inside the tweeter cabinet and these rods will then protrude about 5cm. Afterward the bass cabinet will be passed over the exposed threads and then, with the baffles removed and innards exposed, bolted down from the inside with gaskets on the nuts to ensure the cabinets stay air tight.

I have a similar (but not quite) Bosh cordless, without the quick charger. Good stuff 🙂 What did you pay for that lot?!

Tis good stuff.

Paid 280 for the drill package and just over 30 for the bits. Looking around on the net it seems that was a good deal, especially for a local and independant builders merchant.

That was a good buy. You do luck out sometimes but I'm always a bit weary of power tools on ebay after I bought an SDS cordless drill and one of the expensive batteries had a huge crack in the casing where it had been dropped. It wouldn't have been so bad but because of the damaged it wouldn't fit in the drill. The seller was decent enough about it and did refund minus postage costs, just a shame he didn't tell folks about that in the listing.

Talking of building sites, I have a huge Kango breaker, they're about £600 new but got it for next nothing from someone who clearly had less scruples than the average person.

ShinOBIWAN, those facets on the bass-mid panel look great, really crisp and clean. I'm planning something similar, (if not smaller scale) on my project it would be great if you could show/describe how you made them.

Many Thanks.

I'll be doing another one tomorrow so will take photo's. Pretty simple stuff but effective.

Thanks 🙂 I've seen a few few methods but they all seem to rely on placing another thin layer of MDF over the facet to make it neat.

These will be no different. Eventually I'll use 0.6mm veneer over the angled sections to hide the crudy looking joints ready for the finishing to be applied without fear of joint creep back.

Here's how I do the angles:

One set of baffles are finished now:

And a mock up with baffles against the cabinets which are still incomplete:

Looks superb even in this rather rough and unfinished state, trust me the when I say the photo's don't do it justice.

I won't be posting much, if any, pictures for the next week or so as I need to bring the other cabinet upto this sort of state. So any photo I take during that time will simply be a repetition of what's already been shown before.

Good news regarding the RAAL's. My bank finally got its act together meaning Alex has his money and I will have my tweeters early next week. 🙂 Can't wait to give them a listen and one of the cabinets is virtually ready for mounting the tweeter/mids, so there'll no doubt be some listening and measuring. I'm skint at the minute after some unforeseen expenses(like the drill combo!) so the bass drivers won't be getting ordered for a good couple of months.

cool design

I really like the carved android look of this design. Can't wait to see the finished work. I'll bet they sound great. Makes we want warm weather here so I can put a final finish on my line source BG's.

Great work. I love my slide compound miter saw; combined with a router and a decent portable drill, you can do most anything.

Pity about the bass drivers but at least you get to think about the choice some more. Or did you decide already?

They're definitely going to be 8" Flexunits as I like the idea of identical cone materials covering the majority of the FR for more cohesion. So yep know what I want and Per has come up with a suitable driver spec, just can't afford four at the moment though, I could afford to order a pair right now but you loose the 15% quantity discount which is around £180 on a £1400 order! So will just have to save up a little more.

Shin,

Your progress is inspiring! All I did over the last month was to purchase 2 CDs.

While you have all the tools set up, you might consider building a dome tweeter cabinet slice for insurance. Even a modest Seas 27TDF would provide a good comparison with the ribbon.
