'LGT' Construction Diary

Have been constructing a few power cables cables on and off for the past week or two.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

And some IC's, I didn't build these but instead bought them off ebay since they we're so cheap it didn't make sense to do anything else.

I don't for a minute think these will make the sound better or worse but I buy/build cables for the looks.

Shin,

You'll find that those cables make a tremendous difference, once you connect them to something! Remember that these don't work well in a single-ended configuration. You need to connect both ends to get the full potential of your cables. I hate to recount how many years it took me to discover this :^)

OTOH, your project's lookin' good !!!
Best Regards,
TerryO

Terry,

Well it would be nice to think they'd make some difference but have never really conclusively heard difference between cabling. However, I do like the idea of good looking, quality cabling so don't mind paying a little for that.

As quite often DIY, yet again, offers good value for money with the mains cabling costing just over £30 each and I used good ingredients at that such as Lapp Olflex CY cable, Wattgate IEC's and Clipsal plugs. In comparison I've seen very similar commercial cables selling for upto £140 such as the Kimber 'PK14' and Russ Andrews 'Reference PowerKord'.

Shin, i'm without my CD player at the minute, so if you really are skeptical about cables ever being able to make a difference, i've got a little blue power cord you might want to try against your own.

you're welcome to borrow it for a week or so.

alli can promiseis that its blueness is different to your cables blackness.

edit: scratch that just been informed the cd is on its way back.

not bad....very nice looking indeed. Could you post the ebay link if you dont mind? Gotta a friend who is interested.

I usually build my own using Canare stuff and Belden 89259/9259:

DIY is too addictive ...I gotta stop. My kids and wife are gonna disown me soon.

I agree about DIY being addictive. In someways it could be considered an unhealthy addiction, especially when you put into perspective the lifestyle of a relatively well adjusted person vs. someone who goes to work, thinks about the project they're working for a good part of the day, comes home then works on the project for as long as they can get away with and afterwards its a couple of hours watching TV etc. then off to sleep ready to do it all again the next day. Does this sound familiar? 😀

Its just wrong really but what the hell. :devilr:

I'd like to but don't have a decent setup(that's built yet anyway) to use them in! So I guess I'll have to take you up on that offer later. Your only in Sheffield anyway so a quick 20 minute commute and I could be round at yours anyway.

I know its not just that blue sounds better than black so what's the secret with your power cords? I was thinking about adding some ferrite clamps to each end of the cable but they're about a fiver each so not sure they're worth that.

I didn't build the IC's so I'm not sure about parts. The power cable components were got from ebay since this seemed to be the cheapest place.

Here's the bits I bought:

Plugs: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/13A-Plug-as-u...yZ116852QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Cable: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/High-Quality-...yZ116852QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

IEC: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wattgate-WG32...7164QQcategoryZ116852QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

Braided Sleeve: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Braided-sleev...5800QQcategoryZ116851QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

That's it really. Very easy to put together and I followed the TNT Merlino recipe to make the cables but used different plugs:

the veneer you have used so far looks very nice, are you in any way tempted (for a change 🙂 ) to veneer the whole thing?? I realise you are kinda a gloss painted finish kind of guy, but...

Hi Terry, sorry, missed your post first time around.

I'd like to veneer a project one day but right my veneering skills and experience are low. In contrast I've got many hours behind a spray gun.

In summary; veneering is less outright work but I don't have great skill with it and on the other hand, Spraying is a lot of hardwork and I'm quite skilled at it now. I don't mind hardwork but I do mind how the final finished result comes out and this is mostly determined by how good you are at either the veneering or spraying. So it was an easy choice for me to pick spraying.

Give my suggestion a try; the results will make you look like a pro.

Coat each surface with a thin coat of PVA "yellow" glue and allow to dry. Position the veneer on your speaker surface and run an iron over it. Trim to suit. It's permanent and easy!!

I'm sure it works like a charm Ray but I think I need to get my confidence up to go ahead and tackle an enclosure this large and awkward. If I messed up then it could potentially mean days of fixing.

The best bet, for me, is to start small and then work up from there. This precludes veneering this project but certainly not others.

There really are some beautiful veneers out there that have a look you just can't get with paint. But I've had about 50/50 success/failure rate in my veneering attempt which makes me naturally cautious.

These looked OK for a few days after finishing them:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

But about a week later the veneer bubbled up and I threw them in the bin because it was so bad.

understand about the veneering Shin, however I won't be complaining because whatever it is you do, it tends to look absolutely beautiful.

Yeah, can see the bubbling on your veneered attempt, did you use contact? (unless it was the stuff you posed the box on)

Thanks for the tips re pva and hot iron, the earlier post's aren't visible so I can't attribute the tip, will give it a go myself one day.

By the way Shin, what was the wood you used on the sub(?), it looks very nice indeed.

I check your progress everyday, as do a lot of other people I suspect!! Am always looking forward to new pictures so make sure you have plenty of spare batteries on hand ha ha, would hate to miss my regular dose!
