The fix for dazzling car headlights is simple. France fixed it in the 1930s, tho now the fix is gone because of EU norms.
Indeed. The blue-white colour temperature (6500 k -ish) of headlight LEDs exacerbates the intensity and directivity issues.
I meant in reference to pure motives. Your safety reasoning may be viable but even in terms of retrofitting it's not applicable to my position because they're all late model newer vehicles. There used to be regulation regarding intensity. The manufacturers are the main culprits. It's outright dangerous. You simply cannot see while passing by for a good length. You just hang on. Outrageous, really.
I guess I am confused. You seem to be saying exactly what I am getting at.
If this isn't a safety issue, then what is it? It's what causes me to turn on my high beams. I don't feel comfortable just hanging on and hoping for the best.
The retrofitting aspect is more of a side note that just makes matters worse. In my experience most LED headlights do this to my eyes, even ones that are standard on new cars. I should have made that clearer.

I have turned mine on in response but blinded is still blinded. The offset difference is virtually useless, ime. If there was a sudden emergency it wouldn't change a thing.
Let me restate that most people don't do this.

I might actually try some of those yellow night driving glasses they are selling at Canadian Tire. The other night I had to drive home with my prescription sunglasses on (which have a lighter brown tint than typical sunglasses) and I found that it helped quite a bit with the oncoming LEDs. Still too dark though, and does nothing for dynamic range I guess. Just took the glare off and warmed up the light so it was less dazzling.
I grow plants and really appreciate that led boards are now using the new samsung 301b or 5050 chips getting over 200 lumens per watt. I use
hlg 96 v2 elite boards and they can be jacked up to 320 watts at 55 volts. More efficient than arc lamps now.
Prices went down to about 50cts/Watt for fixtures including drivers with Samsung 301h delivering around 2.5 uMol/J. So even on price they are converging.
^^ That's the only practical use for LEDs that I can honestly say I love them. My Citizen COBs driven by Meanwell 36V supply are a few years old now, but the efficiency compared to MH or sodium is incredible and I am very happy with reliability. Not one failure yet. The plants sure like them, too.
Oh. I guess LEDs make decent indicator lights, diodes, and not bad LCD backlights. 🙂

There has to be regulation and also enforcement. There's a particular tow truck in town I find myself directly "behind" once in a while. His red LED driving lights attached here and there are literally like the flashlight I mentioned in intensity. This guy's insane! There's no way he's not aware. You simply cannot look forward. And I'm behind him!! Is that crazy, or maybe I need counseling?? Maybe after I get out and extinguish them with a hammer.
What really grinds my gears (yep, I just went there) is the jagoffs in their jacked-up trucks who retrofit LEDs, don't aim them properly, then install an LED light bar ("for off-road use") and then run the bloody thing on the highway! Because they are the only ones who matter, so why not have 10 billion candle power lighting up the highway. AmIRight?
I've had to pull over and wait while the purple-black voids disappear from my vision.

Yes, perfect example of what's wrong with the world. See, it's simple, not complicated at all. That tow truck driver's clever strategy is to blind you so you "back off", right? He want's to tow your car but he doesn't want you to be in his universe. A bit of an oxymoron but mostly just moron😎
Yes. AFAIK blue light bleaches out rhodopsin faster than red of green light, thus destroying night vision. Rhodopsin takes about 30 minutes to give you full night vision. That's why we see red lights used for ship and aircraft cockpits, flashlights for astronomy and so on. Pure red light would not be great for headlights, but just eliminating the blue helps a lot. Thus the yellow headlights that used to be mandatory in France. Bright headlamps would not be so blinding if they were not so blue.Indeed. I now were yellow driving glasses at night. I found that a 60 mile drive home at night was far less stressful when wearing the glasses.
I have a Cree led bulb in my living room that has been running continuously since 2017...
A month or two ago, I had a power outage that looked to be a very deep brownout. My LED ceiling lights stayed lit, though quite faintly...

I'm definitely getting some of those glasses, Pano. Hell, I'll just go ahead and get a pair of prescription glasses tinted yellow for night driving. I get all my prescription glasses from an online retailer now for an average total price of $40 per pair, shipped. Surprisingly, the quality is excellent.
I really, really like the the yellow for night driving. The stress relief was a surprise, but I'll take it. 🙂 Sometimes I wear them on cloudy glaring days and they help. Real blue blockers.
I actually have a couple pairs of those come to think of it. The ones that go over your own prescription glasses🙄
You know gents you aren't supposed to stare right into the headlights of on-coming traffic!?
🙂
Night Blindness: Treatments and Prevention
Edit: I shall add that I have blue light and intensity on all screens turned down as much as possible, it helps too to save ones eyes.

If you are finding it difficult to drive at night, especially with the intense glare from the headlights of oncoming traffic, or are having trouble recognizing faces and objects in low light conditions, you may be suffering from night blindness.

The trouble with some LED lights is the LED's are driven hard and this can affect life of the lamp.
You can buy Dubai LED lamps that have more LED's but not driven so hard and they are more efficient.

I haven't noticed any savings. Light dies a heat death and I have electric heat so no savings there in winter, in summer maybe but I use ights less in the summer. Same with electric water heater in utility room, I heat utility room in winter but don't air condition it in summer so heat loss is less.
I bought some Noma brand CFL bulbs years ago and had them all fail within a year. Bought a few LED's over the years to replace frequently used incandescent and before that used dimmers on them to make them last 10 years at last count before switching. No problem so far. Maybe the dimmers I have on most helps as ramp them up.
The clear LED bulbs with the yellow filaments likely don't contain a ballast or any electronics? They seem to be dimmable.
I like the yellow lens idea for driving at night.

I ordered my yellow lens prescription glasses a couple of days ago. Quite eager to try them out.
In the meantime I have read some articles about them and the "studies" indicate it is all hogwash. I prefer to take Pano's word for it and the glasses are covered by my group benefits so whatever. Maybe I will even enjoy wearing them on overcast days, or when I am out hunting or shooting. They'll be handy if I ever buy a helicopter, too. 🙂
