Sorry to "break into" this thread but I find no other way to contact uvodee:
I am from Belgium and I have searched but I cant find any info on where to buy or order OHpanels or >640*480 lcd's WITH video in... I paid way too much for a small low-res lcd (in-car model)
Have you got any idea where I could oredr one for not too much money around Belgium/the Netherlands?
Thanx!

Dierbaar BElgie,

sorry, i bought mine on ebay
i have no clue where to get them in Belgium

so you are looking for a panel with video in ?
what brand? i can look around

ik kan eens rondkijken hier, heb je ebay geprobeert?

er isook een online bedrijf dat zich specialiseert in panels en proj.
www.invsol-inc.com

schappelijke prijzen daar!

Ik heb op e-bay gezocht: nothing interesting, only one of those older psone lcd's... 70€... I feel like I really shouldn't have bought it. Die zwier ik meteen weer ebay op.

I am looking for a at least 640*480 but most importantly: it shouldn't cost too much. Is there a solution for less than 250€?
I heard really nice things about the nview series.
Only problem: I now use a 5.6" lcd and I cant project the corners... a bigger lcd would be even worse? I might use another fresnel? Maar dat zijn problemen voor achteraf eigenlijk 🙂

a) i am willing to shipp them to you if you want to try them out

b) i can also order that universal controller/board and see what happens. if it deos not work properly i can still put it in ebay.

what is the supplier? let me know.

Hi I'd be glad to try your panels for you, the only caveat is the shipping.
I'd feel terrible if they got damaged in shipment 🙁 I'm crossing my fingers that my panel get's here in good shape. I've heard there is something "magical" that seems to nuke panels when they cross the Canada/US border (see couriers/mailhandlers). I got my controller from Spectrah

http://www.spectrah.com/product.htm

I am an OEM and have other (business) uses for the card I selected so had little trouble securing a card from them. I chose the LD S270M, however they have a pretty good sellection to choose from. If you like we can wait to see how mine works out, if it works well maybe I can order a few more for the DIY folks. Sort of set up a "bulk buy" to achieve lower pricing. ( I don't want to make money on this, but will help the group if it's a wanted/do able thing) Any thoughts on this idea folks?

just noticed..

I never really paid too much attention to the "supported panel list" till now. I've gone through Spectrah's web site and all of the controller's that they have showing TTL and LVDS capabillity have the same supported panel list as follows...

LVDS Panel support

LG LP121S3

Chi-Mei N141X201

NEC NL10276AC30-04

10.4 inch LCD Panel

NEC NL6448AC33-18

Sharp LQ10D42

LG 104V2

12.1 inch LCD Panel

Sharp LQ121S1DG11, LQ12S41, LQ12S31

NEC NL8060AC31-12

LG LB121S1

ADI AA121SK02

Torisan TM121SV-02L01

Toshiba LTM12C275A

15 inch LCD Panel

Sharp LQ150X1DG11

Samsung LT150X1-151

Toshiba LTM15C151A

LG LM151X2

The only exception to the rule seems to be the ARV line-up which seems to support much larger panels. I think this further supports my theory that they only tested panels that they "had on hand/went and bought" and called it a day on panel testing once they had a decent sellection of various sized panels from various makers. Thoughts?

ARV's

The "smaller than listed" screen question and the cost were my concern's with the ARV lineup. I kept in mind the average costs for panels both locally and on-line.

It became apparent prety quickly that if I was to look for a super high res laptop screen I was going to pay nearly the same price as for a 15 inch LCD desk monitor. I buy computer gear at wholesale and the best I could find with my local suppliers was $426.00 my cost...before taxes for a Rad5...that I'm gonna tear apart and scrap my warranty?

I suppose what I'm trying to say is....there must be a "law of diminishing returns" in the DIY world, I don't think it can be escaped.

I look at what we are messing with...it's touchy stuff. It wont be misshandled twice. Then I decide how much of my project dollars are going to go towards the "touchy stuff" and "the stuff that gets toasted as normal wear N tear" Then when I can be sure that I'll get X amount of benefit for X amount of more money for this particular project I might go further than the TTL panel. I'm not expecting miracles....just something to occupy my time.

If desktop LCD's get cheap in Canada like they are in the US and some other countries I'm buying one ( and maybe a viewsonic interface )

Option 1
You buy a desktop lcd monitor you have a known device with its published specifications at a particular price.
You buy it, you take it home, you attempt the modification and wreck it. Or you succeed.
There is no way to reduce your dollar input unless you can get you hands on an item that has been shop soiled, is being sold off cheap to make way for new models or you get one out of the paper or local promotions.

Option 2
You become knowledgable about laptop panels. Not a lot of people are knowledgable about laptop panels. Not at the deeper technical level. But say you do become knowledgable, that opens up a whole new world because I believe there are hundreds of panels just sitting on shelves because not many people know how to use them or what hardware is needed to drive them. Many spare part panels are being unused as people upgrade to better product. We have an example in this thread. Uvodee has scored a couple of panels but cannot yet drive them. It is likely he did not pay too much for them so his dollar input is low. Still have to modify them for projection but even though there is still a risk of failure its not so important if the panel is cheap.

Option 3
You buy a 10 - 15 year old projection panel off Ebay.
Advantages. All ready for projection. If it has composite video you dont need to buy a controller or use a computer to drive it. You still can if you want to if it has computer in. Many guys report projection panels look heaps better when driven from computer than the video input. Much better colours.

Compare prices USD

Option 1
Analogue Desktop lcd monitor 1024 x 768 $200 - $300 - $400
Plus risky modification
Plus a computer or controller to drive it

Option 2
Laptop lcd.
vga free or not very expensive
Svga $30 - $100
Xga $100 and up
Plus risky modification
Plus a computer or controller to drive it

Option 3
Old Projection panel
Vga $100 - $200
Svga $200 - $300
Xga $350 - $500
No risky modification
No computer or controller needed

Option 2 Has the most options for knowledgable DIY people.
Option 1 You can loose a lot
Option 3 Safest but old technology.

remp

There! Thats the fine point I couldn't put on it 🙂

Got a couple of design ideas I'm working on now for the housing, lamp mounted in the top of a "tube" shooting down ...then out. Kinda like hangin an OHP from the ceiling. Keeps all or some or most of the lamp heat above the LCD.

zardoz (category2 personality) sounds like a diagnosis......

Thats the thing...if I screw up a panel..it's only going to cost me another 100 bucks. And (another 2 week wait!) then I'm good to go again. If I screw up a brand new 15 inch LCD how fast is my wife going to let me just run out and buy another one to take apart and "honest honey...I know what went wrong last time..." 2 monitors poor'er and I'm staring at the better part of a Grand. This way I can go through 4 or 5 before I get close to that. I'm going to use cheap and dirty till I see it will work and work well then I'll look for the best panel it can run

I read on one of the threads where some clown took his monitor apart...decided he didnt want to risk it...put it back together then took it back to the store for a refund. One day he will buy something that has had simmilar done to it...that might humble him a touch.

I dont know if this should be a separate thread, but I would like to see who has any luck taking apart analog lcd tft monitors, and using them besides the guy with the dell 15 inch, preferably people telling prices they paid and brands and stuff, I was looking at a 200 dollar 15 inch to maybe buy and take apart that i saw on UBID.

Not a bad idea 🙂 Personally I dont see a problem with listing them in this thread. I mean once you pull the mask and back off of them they are just "LCD panels" with all the gear needed to run them right?
But you may also get more interest generated from those that seek that path by starting a new thread. Sort of like a "Good monitor/Bad monitor" thread?
